Buffalo is on the rise again. It's a sentiment Western New Yorkers have been celebrating during the past several years of rebirth. But on the city's East side, many of the poorest neighborhoods are not on the rise and have a long way to go. Erica Brecher talks with social advocates and city officials on what's being done to help with East side poverty and when desperate residents can expect change. (November sweeps 2015)

  • Our Government should invest in America's cities rather than sending billions to foreign countries. Build Buffalo!
  • I was born and raised in buffalo, walking distance from Fillmore st.I left in 77 after the blizzard and have not been back since.

Erica, are sure? Black Rock, East and South Buffalo have so many boarded up slums and abandoned building. Great Story. So many beautiful historic Churches and Buildings in Buffalo. Hopefully they can keep them open. I am concerned about the Broadway Market. That area is really bad.

I AGREE SPRUCE UP THE OLD STORE FRONTS TO START WITH, KEEP THEM ORIGINAL AND PRESERVE NOSTALGIA.

After the medical campus was built - the neighborhood improved. However when rents increased everyone cried gentrification 🙄.

5 years later: what's the verdict on the progress ?

It costs money to rebuild housing. The city has bought houses and has put 300,000 dollars into each one to rebuild them. But the city has had to take a loss in order to resell them to low income families for 70 to 80,000 thousand a piece.
  • I left Buffalo in 2005 raised on East Ferry around Fillmore and Humboldt Parkway went to School 59 from Kindergarten to 6th grade and Genesse Humboldt Junior high and Bennett High and the Ohio State University class of 78 worked at Dunlop Goodyear for 30 years have a home on Dutton and Delavan and one in Toledo Ohio hope Buffalo get it together especially on the East side it would be a shame to let those people down and that historic part of town and let the world know that unlike the caucasian man said about his dark age thinking of people should stay on their own side of town when will people like that learn it that type of backwards thinking is keeping Buffalo from being the success that needs to be

They don’t care about the poor & disenfranchised still to this day
  • @paulwild3676
Name me one city in the Western world which doesn’t have these disparities?
  • Sorry as a business tourist...Buffalo has some beautiful buildings and through CHEAP MONEY, there has been some investment downtown. However, a local told me this is kind of a facade: job growth is minimal and people arent flocking here )(even for the Roswell and MandT jobs)... there is so much visible blight. I like the city but lets face it...there aren't many people coming to live there who aren't locals.
