The Flag of the United State of America is one of the most recognisable things on Planet Earth (and also the moon). But when people call the flag “the Star-spangled banner” that is not quite right.

It's a banner, and it's got a spangled star pattern. Star-spangled banner lol

While the US flag looks different today, note that our flag since the beginning of the republic automatically changes each time a new state is added. A new star is added for each member state, and originally they tried doing that with the stripes, but it was a problem, so we moved it back to 13, one for each original colony. So it is organically the same flag, though its appearance is obviously different. Our current flag is different than it was in WWII, which is different from the Spanish American War, which is different than the Civil War, which is different than the War of 1812, which is different than the Revolution. It is all the Star Spangled Banner though.

God, imagine 50 stripes on the flag
  • The American flag has changed over the years to accommodate additional states. They are all called "The Star Spangeled Banner."
  • Me: oh, what countries' flag could it be based on? Him: Just the US flag but old loloolololo
  • @MrsShocoTaco
Wrong. That was the original, they are all the Star Spangled Banner.
  • In another song Francis Scott wrote in 1805 called When the warrior returns he calls the flag The Star Spangled Flag
  • Thank you!!! I kept telling people the national anthem wasn't even recognized by many Americans during world War 2, especially most vets of that war and ww1.

I disagree... Just because the first US flag is called the US flag doesn't mean this one ain't called that right? Doesn't that mean the name could probably be inherited. I'm not very familiar with the laws and technicalities, but I must say that based on the evidence you've presented to us it seems that the 50 star flag could still be called "the star spangled banner". So that's what I think our flag could be called 🇺🇲

He never wrote the star spangled banner , he just wrote the words . It used to be a old English drinking song and he just changed the words .
  • We need to talk about the bit in the anthem that no one sings. Fun times.
  • Imagine in some distant future, a United States space ship getting caught in the gravity well of a black hole. The ship explodes as it crosses the event horizon. The only item left outside the black hole is a tool bent almost beyond recognition. A star mangled spanner.

While the us flag looks different today note that our flag since the beginning of the republic automatically changes each time a new stat is afded
  • According to the US Flag code which is advisory Federal Law. All past versions of the flag of the United States are given the same treatment and respect as the current version.
  • Someone in the comments mentioned that the Star Spangled Banner was an English drinking song and guess what? He is CORRECT! my grandfather sang it at football matches in the 1920's sorry 🇺🇸
