Sylmar in one sentence:
Sylmar is truly magical - it is surrounded by 3 major freeways, has large lots for horses, and a variety of types of homes - it's the East Valley's finest neighborhood.
----------
Script:

Behind me is Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar. Although it was established 45 years ago, it is the newest college in the Los Angeles Community College District. Sylmar is, by landmass, one of the biggest communities - and in that sense, its story is one of the Valley’s most fascinating. It’s considered the TOP of los angeles and in that sense, the mysteries here never end.

It traces its roots to the founding of the San Fernando Mission where olive production followed, particularly sylvan olives. Before the Spaniards came in the 1770’s indigenous people roamed the area. There were once 150,000 Shoshones here. By the 1920’s, however, just over 10 percent remained.

Some people might know Sylmar for its many disasters: In 1971, there was the Sylmar Earthquake; four months later, there was the worst tunnel explosion in California history; in the year 2000 there was a mid-air plane collision, and in 2008 the Sayre wildfire, but we won’t get into that just yet . . .

Standing near the site, William Mulholland watched the olive leaves catch the light appearing as silver and green waves crashing against the mountain. Some believe this is where Sylmar got its name. Sylmar means Sea of Trees.

Traveling 338 miles from the east side of the Sierra Nevada to the City of Los Angeles, the Cascades are the terminus of the Los Angeles Aqueduct which took eight years to complete.

The Sylmar climate was also considered healthy, and so a sanitarium was established, the first in a series of hospitals in the neighborhood, Olive View UCLA Medical Center being one of the local hospitals.

Did you know that Sylmar has its own martini?
According to the Sylmar Chamber of Commerce, the Official Sylmartini Recipe was designed “with ingredients to symbolically represent some of Sylmar’s historical past.”

That’s all well and good you may be thinking, but what is it like to live there?

Real estate in Sylmar - in my opinion is the nicest east valley neighborhood. You have standard glut of mid-sized single family residences and seemingly infinite condos/townhomes off of Foothill. They say the rougher part of sylmar is the center, and it is true. The more you go to the exterior, the more beautiful the properties get. The Carey ranch and Saddle tree communities offer clean air and stunning views. All the way up Polk and Hubbard are some communities that are almost embedded in nature (Kendall’s shots of summit mountain view, carey ranch, and saddle tree)

And of course, there’s Rancho Cascades which actually separated itself as the nicer part of Sylmar recently. Sylamr as well has the distinction, along with Chatswroth, as being one of the two main communities zoned for Agriculture which means you can have horses! Sylmar remains the last place in the Valley where you can still find massive lots for affordable prices.

Furthermore, the fact that it’s surrounded by 3 major freeways - the 5, 118, and 210, it’s a very important hub for Los Angeles traffic.I recommend Sylmar, you get a real bang for your buck out here.

Housing rare collectibles that include mechanical musical instruments, antique furniture and over 250 American and European autos dating from 1898 to 1997, the Nethercutt Museum has something for everyone.

The Pioneer Cemetery was alleged to have been the location of the cemetery scene in the classic horror film Night of the Living Dead, but the film’s art director said it was actually in an olive grove in a Sylmar resident’s backyard.

There’s endless hiking trails throughout the whole city.

Nearby popular restaurants are Caruso’s Italian Kitchen or Casa Torres restaurant.

There are fourteen public and eight private schools within Sylmar. There is also a Juvenile Hall.

As I mentioned before, this area has seen a lot of tragedies and natural catastrophes.

Still, despite these catastrophes, people have purchased property here. Why? Because the prices are reasonable by Southern California standards.
Currently, the population exceeds 90,000 residents. If you are looking for a starter home or heck, any type of home, Sylmar might be the place for you.
