Travel with the train driver as we travel from Queenstown to Lynchford on steam locomotive 'Mount Lyell Number 3'. This railway is a reconstruction of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company railway between Queenstown and Regatta Point on the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia. The line is progressively being upgraded and reopened toward the full railway being operational again.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway traverses the best part of Tasmania, such beauty, a photographers paradise for happy snapping

[ x ] Another neat ride-along ... really pretty county-side there in Tasmania. As always, thanks for sharing. [Greetings from Tucson]

I first rode this train in 1962 when it was carrying sheets of copper to Strahan with one passenger car at the back. The ride down the other side of the mountain was quite hair-raising, especially when it rushed over the large trestle bridge which was very rickety and wobbly!

March 2023 we were booked onto the Wilderness Railway from Queenstown, I can't remember how far we were going but it was past the rack section. We flew from NZ, landed in Hobart and the drove to Queenstown. The next morning we were all exited about our trip, the scheduled time for departure came and went and we told the loco wasn't steaming properly. Sometime later they announced that another loco had the fire lit, that too had issues and we missed out on our ride and were refunded. About 2 weeks before leaving NZ I called the Wilderness Railway asking about attaching a GoPro to the loco because I hadn't seen anything on YT and received as resounding no. Maybe that was the silver lining in the cloud because I would have been disappointed as my GoPro had failed on the next use at Colebrook when recording "South Line Paper Train Video." Was Lynchford the end of the trip for you? You certainly got lucky with the weather in Queenstown, cold and wet when we were there. We will get to TAS again to ride this train. Our next Tasman crossing is for the Ghan later this year. Hi from NZ, Anthony.

Sometimes I forget how pretty Tasmania is. Really nice vid. Thanks.
  • You gotta let out that steam to propel forward, that's what life's all about

A few questions, is it 3ft 6in gauge, what weight is the rail and does the driver use the right hand side of the cab ?
