Standards Australia is updating and modernising AS 4000–1997, General conditions of contract. To accompany the beginning of the public comment period, Standards Australia hosted an webinar to discuss the project review process, provide an overview of the changes made to AS 4000, and host a Q&A session.
AS 4000 is a standard form contract which has been widely used in the construction industry for over 25 years. In accordance with industry feedback, a revision of AS 4000 has been conducted by a committee of industry representatives and experts.
These experts were tasked with reviewing AS 4000 in accordance with the following principles:
1. Reflect developments in legislation.
2. Keep the updates to the contract tightly focused so as not to impact the risk allocation between the parties.
3. Contemporise the language throughout the contract.
4. Amend the terminology and structure so the contract is easier to use and read.
