  • 100% wrong. I'm American and that's some bullshit by caddie. Caddie showed no sportsmanship

As a former caddie , your only job is in support of the player. You don't speak unless spoken too or asked for advice. You get yardage, replace divots, rake sand traps and tend the flag. You read putts if asked for advice. Thats pretty much it. This Caddie was way out of line, he should have been standing over on the edge of the green -- A caddy always stands in the fringe with the bag unless helping his player or tending the flag. This Laclave guy acting like a bum on a world stage. He needs to learn the etiquette of the game and remember that he is a caddie and only a caddie.

If the caddy would have just said “ sorry mate” and walked back that would have been fine. But to have a go a Rory and even shout at him and wave his hand at him while Rory is down eyeing up his shot is totally unacceptable and he shouldn’t be allowed to caddy again in the RC. Total douche
  • @Goldmember66
big golf fan here in America. Cantlay’s caddy was way out of line. Anyone that thinks otherwise isn’t being honest with themself.
  • @creez1
As an American, I agree, as a veteran caddie he should have known better. Having a go at Rory after the celebration was extremely bad form. And Rory, Justin and Shane have always handled themselves with class and by all accounts are good guys. They wouldn't have reacted if there wasn't a significant breach. All that said, within the confines of the Ryder Cup, I love the heat, the controversy, and it fuels the competition!! It's not the end of the world and it was good theater!! Congrats to Europe. It was an ole fashion butt kicking!!!

Bottom line: caddies should be seen and not heard. Stay out of the way and keep your mouth shut. It’s disappointing that the USA golfers didn’t control the caddie. I would not expect Cantlay to step in because he is a bit of an a-hole. But, it’s on the 18th, everyone is there; where are the USA coaches? Other players? Very disrespectful.
  • His player had finished. He shouldn’t have been on the green let alone close to a player about to putt. Poor. Very poor.
  • I don't remember seeing Rory McIlroy lose his temper like this before. He is usually a calm and collected gentleman. To my mind it would take someone being a proper arsehole to get a reaction like this from him.
  • @frankhannah7227
Cantlay should have got his caddie in check, he’s his responsibility!
  • @timdench2583
Once a caddie has helped give a read on the putt they shouldn’t be on the green unless they’re attending the pin. Players also should control their caddies.
  • @stevengee504
Once a player has putted out they have no reason to be even on the green, poor etiquette at the least!
  • @dh3279
I agree with your assessment, even though it doesn’t appear to me that he was in Rory’s line. . . . Or even close. To me, that doesn’t matter. LaCava was WRONG on several levels. A caddie shouldn’t ever put themselves in the center of the drama, good or bad. Their job is to carry the bag, give distances, and offer advice as appropriate for their player/boss. Even though I think Rory was a smidge impatient, and LaCava wasn’t in his actual line, he was in his “space.” When Rory asked him to move, that should have been the end of it. LaCava should have immediately moved. Instead, he talked shit to the opposing player (and default leader of the European team). Caddies making the story about them is like baseball umpires or basketball referees making it about them. It should always be about the players, NOT officials or caddies. Get the hell out of the way and carry the bag.
  • @Jono01
There is an aerial view which shows the whole scene. LaCava celebrated Cantlay’s putt and waved his hat then put it back on his head. If it finished there, there would have been no issues. He then took the hat off again and waved it some more but this time walking closer to where Rory was walking around to read his putt. Rory nearly walked into him. Not saying LaCava was trying to put Rory off but he should have just apologised and moved out of his way instead of arguing.
  • @MK-oj8ol
American here that agrees that the caddie should know his role. Caddie was in the wrong.
  • @TurdFergusson318
He wasn’t “in his line” but definitely was an unclassy move.
  • @pete1208
Unfortunately with the Ryder Cup sportsmanship goes out the window to an extent, as does decorum, manners and general decency. I find it really hard to watch the RC because I think it shows an ugly side of golf that the players, fans and commentators all get swept up in.
  • @fkokotos
I agree with your take on this. I also watched it live, and I thought that the American players’ gesture of taking their hats off and waving them was a nice moment. All within the spirit of the game. But the caddy’s behaviour, as shown, was indeed outside acceptable etiquette
  • @glennfosberg8939
LaCava was out of line. Rory had every right to tell him to back off.
  • @CricketEngland
Rory got his own back in his singles match on day 3 though
