  • My youngest brother has autism and has very much inspired me to become a special ed teacher. Watching your videos is definitely helping me realize the reality and struggles of it all as well as the good parts. I feel like Special education is my calling. Love you
  • That is so AWESOME to hear that someone with auditory difficulties is doing so well! I have four boys that I've worked with that are considered to be mute. One is selectively mute, and he's so affectionate, and just all around sweetheart.

+mrsdorkewicz I am glad that I found you because I live with autism and I once was in special ed resource classes back in the 80s and 90s when I was in school . I hear you mentioned class dojo and how you do a point system and I wanted to tell you that class dojo actually does a point system and that is part of how it helps the teacher manage their class and classroom . I am glad that you find so many ways to encourage your students because I had a good number of times specifically back in my elementary school years when I would feel discouraged over certain things or when you are wanting to do a different activity with me and I am stuck in my bubble and are often times afraid to step out of that bubble because it was the only thing that I knew at the time and that kept me in a positive mindset . I used to draw Disney Characters or talk in the voice of a Disney Character or tell a joke to keep me in a happy mindset and I had the biggest challenge when the teacher would try to refocus me because I was afraid of what I didn't know or just did not feel like touching on . Keep on encouraging and victory will be yours in the end as much as the victory will also come to your students . Trust me because it happened to me . - Dwight

I'm sending your channel out to all of NYC Teaching Fellows SPED teachers. WE are ALL obsessed with Erin Condren now because of you. Love, Michelle
  • Cool. I work in DC so it's interesting to see how VA works. I think I prefer DC in terms of support. My specific branch in SpEd I get 2 aides and the class size is capped at 8 students. This allows me to be more flexible and manage all the challenging behaviors more easily. Because there's never a year without students who don't have extremely challenging behaviors and different skill sets since it is 3 grades and not 1-2. VA requires way less data though. Wow 5 samples. By the end of the year I have at least 100-150, some years are better than others 😂
  • I grew up in the Special Education area or whatever you want to call it. But for me, we were all in general education classes but we would go to CMC for tests or any assignments we needed help with or that we didn't' get any/all of the accommodations that we needed. So it sounds like I would be in the mild group.
