I had a late Army mate who bought a Black cab M3 brand new in 2001 tax free. He let my drive it on the autobahn with the roof down, we maxed it out at 165mph on the speedo before the limiter kicked in. This video brought back that lovely memory and of my old army pal Paul, so thanks Joe.

This is more like it Joe!!!! Everyone reviews the new stuff but this is what gets us all excited!!! More of this please!!! Had two E46’s and I can’t wait to get another, 330i being the dream!!

Love it. Great move testing something ‘affordable’, especially when the world is crazy expensive. The dash. Made at a time where a car was for driving. No distractions, no infotainment, just the functionality for driving

I bought my E46 M3 coup in 2008 when it was 3 years old with 16,500 miles on the clock from Coopers Norwich. I used the car every day to travel to work summer and winter and it's now got just over 62,000 on the clock. The car has no mods and is absolutely awesome down the back roads with all the power you will ever want. In 2021 i bought a new M340i in oxide grey, good car but it's nowhere near as good as the E46 M3. I will never sell the M3. It would be good if you could do a video on the E30 and M36 M3 giving your views on the difference between the cars.

Every time you pressed on the accelerator and I heard that raspy engine note 😍… Just incredible.

Definitely more content /reviews like this on older cars ! Say one a month or similar !

Love this vid Nostalgia is such a powerful emotion - Love the fact that it is not “restored” A few of these vids now and again would be sweet

Great video Joe! I worked at a BMW dealership from 2002 - 2004. I remember seeing many of these, in this combination. I also remember having 2 x M3 CSLs and a Z8 in stock, which we struggled to sell at around the same time. Great content! ❤

More old cars on the channel Joe, they have so much more character and appeal to a bigger audience.

The e46 cabriolet's look so elegant with the roof down. The long flat shoulder line is a beautiful design

Same year as my Z3. I remember the forums at the time were all about the boot floors cracking where the diff was mounted on the Z3Ms. BMW had many a warranty repair same as the E46s. Great episode, enjoyed it.
  • I used to have an '02 manual M3 Coupe in the exact same Phoenix Yellow, I absolutely adore that color, and I do miss that era quite alot. Not so sure about that interior, and I'd never have a convertible, but for 5k, it's hard to complain. I had the original interior on my old PY M3 spec'd in a dark blue, almost indigo color (can't remember what that one was called), but it looked great. I had some Recaro Sport's made in a custom matching blue, eventually stripped out the rear and turned it into a track car. Sold it to a good friend back in like 2010 who still has it; he's 3500 miles away from me now, but it's awesome to see him still running that old beauty. I have my '21 M2 Competition manual now, and I actually tried really hard to go thru the Individual program and have the M2C painted in Phoenix Yellow as a bit of a tribute to my old M3, my dealer even connected me with BMW NA to try and make it happen (because unfortunately, there weren't really any Individual options for the M2C). BMW NA ended up even connecting me with the Individual Program folks at BMW Germany to see what we could do, and even then, it was a very difficult thing to make happen. It was possible, I should stress, but the cost of making it happen on a 2021 M2C was just a bit crazy. It would've had to go thru the "Individual Manufaktur" program (or however it's spelled). Basically, if you have unlimited money, and get in touch with the Individual guys in Germany, they'll literally give you any car in any spec you want, whether it's on their list of "Individual" options or not (there seem to be a few different tiers of "Individual" programs from BMW, I ended up learning after owning M-cars for over 2 decades. There's the listed "Individual" program options, and then there's the "Individual Manufaktur" program that you have to go thru BMW Germany to find out about). They ended up telling me that getting the M2C in Phoenix Yellow would've been a bit easier and less insanely expensive if I wasn't trying to do it in the car's final year (final months, really). I was gonna get a CS, but I was a little too late to get one new, and I didn't really want to go for a used example. I knew I was gonna be tuning the car anyways, so really, the Competition is just the better option in that case. I wasn't much a fan of the adaptive dampers anyways (I'm not a fan of adaptive dampers in general, really. It's an interesting but flawed idea, from an engineering perspective). Oh well, I tried, but it all turned out well. I still ended up getting one of the last M2 Comps and I don't plan on ever selling it (especially with what the new so-called "M2" turned out to be). Soon I'll be having the DME cloned so I can start properly tuning it. Damn encrypted DME's. Maybe one day I'll have the whole car repainted in Phoenix Yellow, cause I think it would look excellent on the M2Comp. They really should have come up with a larger color palette for the F87's. I know they're bringing some Individual options to the G87, but it seems like it's just those dumb "frozen" colors, which just accentuate the awful clashing geometric shapes of the G87 even more. I honestly think all these matte and "frozen"-style paint jobs are gonna look really bad in 5 or 10 years, it's just a very trendy thing at the moment, but living in CA, I'm already insanely tired of seeing matte paint on AMG's and M-cars. Even worse, are the the matte wraps everyone seems to be getting. At least the wraps will come off, but that paint is simply too hard to take care of for most owners. I predict there will be many, many nasty looking matte paint jobs in used car lots in the not-so-distant future.

I adored my 330i cabrio on the 'W' reg (2000). Purchased the official BMW cup holders that sat underneath the arm rest too. Such a silky smooth engine - I think the more relaxed tune and ride of the 330i means they make more sense twenty+ years on than the M3's. Personally never had an issue with the brakes though again helped by the more relaxed 7/10th's driving style the 330i encourages

That E46 is a true classic. Not a line too much or too little, great stance and proportions, perfect wheel design, ... It makes a lot of modern stuff look like overexcited teenagers' drawings
  • @Biggyc7
Joe, I have a silver grey coupe and am surprised how much nice attention it gets, people coming over when I park up somewhere reminiscing or driving alongside and giving thumbs up. Use mine a track day toy, great fun and relatively cheap
  • @adammoonface
Great vid! I have daily'd a 2001 E46 330ci Coupe manual for over 2 years and I love it. Got it with 42k on the clock, now it's 72k. 34 MPG on my commute, which ain't bad really. Comfortable cruiser, plenty of poke and fun on the twisties. One day, I'll have an M3 as a play thing 🤞
  • @simon9479
I had 51 reg m3 e46 will always be in my heart the best thing I ever did was have an inspection 1 service at Bmw. They adjusted all of the valves and God did it run well after that
  • @pabloemms
When you mentioned issues, I immediately thought 'rear subframe'. We had an 04 330 sport cab in Imola Red, one of my favourite cars ever, only sold as the family got bigger, for an 330d touring !
  • @brad4938
Great video. WRT the stone in the rear left brake disc, this can easily be resolved my stopping the car in a quite place and reversing it. In most cases the stone will come out.

I've owned my 2005 coupe e46 m3 for over 5 years now, just done regular oil changes and never cost me much maintenance wise, just enjoyed it, highlight was it appeared on Fifth Gear earlier this year when Jason Plato drove it against the new G89 M3 (and he much preferred mine) it cost me £8k probs could get double that even with 136k Miles 👍
