Three years ago my wife was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. She completely changed her diet and gradually lost about 100 lbs.She took Metformin 500mg and followed the exact recommended dosage.By testing her blood twice a day and keeping a log book certain foods were eliminated.Last year our family doctor told her if her blood tests stayed the same for 1 year she could stop using Metformin 500mg.Her last test in early August 2018,came through as normal, and Metformin 500mg was stopped. It was then that the side effects for her became glaringly obvious. The thick callouses on her feet just fell off,the skin between her toes stopped peeling and her dry mouth from no saliva returned to normal.
  • I was on this for 4 years.Did some research & talked with Dr. I trusted. First thing he said is to get as much of processed white flour out of diet. No fruit juice, eat whole fruit instead! I am now off the drug & have low A1C. Just know your own system. Some need the help.
  • Really helpful. Thanks for doing this. One thing I've learned is that we have to be proactive, and it really helps to have some helpful information so that we can talk to our physicians with at least some bit of knowledge. Again thanks!
  • Did not take the Metformin. I just lost 50 pounds, began a sugar free, low sodium, low but good fats and more veggies than I could ever believe diet. Only fish aand poultry. This straightened out diabetes, all numbers are good. Exercise too. Feel great. I hope this stay the way it is. I have maintained for a year.

I am a retired nurse. The best wound care seminar I went to was given by a pharmacist. Thank you for this .....very informative.
  • I had a serious issue with Metformin. 18 months ago I spent 4 days in ICU due to extremely low BP (60/40), caused by dehydration. I don't have a colon (full colectomy 10 years ago) so most of my fluids expel anally. I had an episode where I was getting extremely thirsty, so I drank more water. Without a colon I was not recirculating electrolytes or harmones and the water flushed out what little I had. The emergency staff told me that Metformin exacerbates water loss. My doctor subsequently had me stop taking it. Recently I engaged in a long fast and now do intermittent fasting on a keto diet. My blood sugar went from a high of 412 a month ago and average of 222 over the last 3 months to an average of 139 within the last week. I'm 71yo and intend to stick around.
  • Helped my wife, 38yo - and told she could never get pregnant - get pregnant. My sister in law too. Both have PCOS. My wife was originally taking it for lowering sugar. What a surprise and blessing.
  • My mother is type 2 diabetic 68 years old and she was on metformin for 3 years and since the year 2 started experiencing severe constipation along with real bad muscle cramps and pain in the soles of feet to the degree she would wake up in the night with this pain. I did some research only to discover thousands of other people also reported these same issues. I decided to gradually wean her off metformin while paying carefull attention to her diet and reducing carbs considerably. after about a week of abandoning metformin all her issues were resolved and because of the lw carb diet her blood sugar readigs were also within normal range. She is like a new person. Please be carefull with this medication blood sugar can be controlled through diet alone and my personal opinion is this drug is a huge money spinning scam. T2 diabetes can be fully controlled through diet alone.

My diabetic Nurse gave me metformin ...I started to take it , I noticed that I was getting out of breath a lot quicker , it affected my back , and made me put in weight , since stopping taking it , its got better .
  • I am feeling good with metphormin. It has helped me lose weight gradually and beautifully. All swells I used to see on my body are gone including hernia. I do detox programs to compliment. I got side effects on HB though so I have been put on ferrous and folic acid and combining them are working so well for me. Iam managing.

Been on metformin for years. Two years ago developed pernicious anaemia which means my body no longer absorbs B12. This is a direct result of taking the medicine over a long period my gp has advised. So now have to be given a B12 jab every ten weeks.
  • Youtube is a great platform to whatever the fork of medication you have to talk about. Keep it up!

I experienced episodes of hypoglycaemia , Vitamin B-12 deficiency symptoms like dizziness, blurry vision, numbness of sole etc . I stopped Metformin and controlled my blood sugar exercises, low carb diet . I gradually recovered from the side effects .
  • I've only been on it for 3 months, 2000 mg's daily, and have no side effects. It obviously effects people differently so if it will help, use it. If its not worth the adverse reactions you may suffer, opt for another med and hope for the best. Good luck and health to all.
  • A few days of taking this caused a severe skin rash over most of my body. This was ongoing for almost two years.Massive doses of steroids finally reduced the rashes, but to this day I still have skin problems after four years.
