Every demi-god in Elden Ring embodies a heroic concept that has become corrupted over time. Godrick's heroic trait is Miyazaki's most used one. The once great king, now fallen.

I have an enormous soft spot for Godrick as Tragic Character. He's an underdog -- a "runt" among demigods -- who grew to power through his development of "grafting" his stunted flesh to other flesh. He ultimately became a monster when he turned this divine gift for flesh-grafting into something ignoble and oppressive, rather than something that could better the general population in the form of medical care etc. Instead of granting limbs to the broken and healing to the sick, he just collected the best of everything for himself, and kept the empty remainder in stasis with equally empty sentries. He could have achieved truly greater heights with a bit of charity and long-term thought, but instead thought only of himself and his scions.
  • I also love the detail of godrick's axe being a greataxe while godfrey's is a colossal weapon

Knowing a once great kingdom existed, and all you can do is tread in it's ashes... That feel is too real.
  • It's such a bittersweet feeling when we see all these once great worlds and meet their people but then our imagination runs wild and we get that temptation to also see what they were like in the past. I think Elden Ring did this the best in Souls games so far, I'd so badly want to meet and fight Radahn, Godfrey and Placidusax in their absolute prime and see the Lands Between before the shattering.

There's also a parallel between the Fire Giant's "golden age" and the modern trolls that are believed to be descendants of them. Which, Godrick also grafts a troll's torso onto himself.

Should've grafted Rune Bears onto himself. Would've been unstoppable and made even Godfrey proud.

Wow, incredible video. I'm glad you haven't completely given up on Elden Ring. You always give the bigger picture or an angle I've never thought of.

Just wanted to say that i started reading the Brothers Karamasow after your Frenzied Flame video. That book does not disappoint. Thx.
  • Godrick Knights: I want to go home, O I want to go home. Redmane Knights: Alas, dear home, I shan't see you again!
  • Little aside, I wonder if Godwyn’s befriending the dragons brought them ‘in from the cold’ of being associated with the Crucible/Age of Plenty like the misbegotten or omen are. While all things bestial are considered savage but this act by Godwyn allowed the Dragons to be the exception…even if the Erdtree is the Crucible without destined death (my theory) so they’re all following the same thing really.

No man ha ever sought drip more than he did. He was so close, and yet so far from obtaining it.

At first I was sad the video was only 10 minutes long, but damn. That didn’t need another second. Excellent work.

On one of Godricks legs there's a cowboy boot with a spur on it.
  • if there's ever a show or anime or something for elden ring, a drama surrounding a more grounded Godrick and seeing how he devolved into what he becomes would be absolutely marvelous to watch.

Having played From Soft games recently; they’re very good at making your weak character beat heroes and legends far above their punching weight without undermining the power level of those characters.

I see Godrick as all of From Softs fears in the form of a character. He takes all of his strengths from other warriors Out of fear and envy for greater warriors What if people saw Elden ring as this abomination of previous great ideas being grafted together to make something inauthentic? Godrick is nostalgic of the glory days and is pathetic compared to it. What if people see this game the way people see Godrick? A weakling compared to his lineage. And his last line about going to a place bathed in rays of gold. If Elden ring failed to live up to its lineage, at least it will still be hidden within the golden shade of the better games. The glory days of From Software. To overcome this fear they made a character about it and made him one of the first bosses to be defeated and the player and from software move on the future. We shouldn’t kill the past We should kill our insecurities and secure our future.
  • I’ve heard a theory that when Godrick lost to Melania, he probably got some inspiration for grafting when he saw her prosthetic arm
  • I think Rykard is a more direct translation of the fallen king trope.
  • This was a remarkably concise look into the story compared to the community's recent output- it's amazing what clearly defined themes can do, huh? I can see why this project is what tempted you back into making Elden Ring videos.
