A controversial decision by leaders at the University of Southern California relates to the debate raging on many U.S. campuses over the war in Gaza. The school says it's canceling a planned graduation speech by its valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, due to safety concerns. This follows the online response to a pro-Palestinian link that Tabassum posted on her Instagram account.

USC doesn't want to put this woman center stage in the graduation ceremony because of her political views and identity. It has little to do with "safety".
  • @mnelson2008
Shame on USC. We allll know why they silenced her.

Since when is criticizing the actions of the Israeli government tantamount to hating Jews? Criticizing America's government doesn't mean I hate Americans 🤷‍♂

AIPAC should be required to register under FARA..Stop foreign election interference.
  • @Ericaaaaaaaaaa
Ironically, they have given her a much bigger platform and more attention by trying to silence her!

If you want to know who’s in charge just see who you’re not allowed to criticize.

This is wrong! This girl has been the top student in her class. And If she is not allowed to speak in front of her class in person, she should at least be able to make her speech on tape and have it played to the University if there is actually a legitimate safety concern! This is not right!
  • strange that none of USC's students have been informed by the school of any "serious threats" to their safety, or what to look out for, or of any precautions to take because of those "threats"
  • Funny i bet had it been pro Israel it would be allowed. Tired of this
  • @desmeisme
For such a rich school why not get more security for graduation, they should have that anyway
  • Hamas does not represent all Palestinians. Judaism does not represent all Peoples in the State of Israel. People need to think and hear. Decernment please.

aipac made some calls and made it happen.

The corporate mainstream position is that they haven't yet decided what speech is over the line? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
  • The college is worried about the loss of donation money, and the embarrassment

If I were a graduating USC student, I simply would not attend the ceremony. It's a silly event to begin with, but under these circumstances, who could feel good about being there?
  • USC is all about money. I love in Los Angeles. USC is probably hearing all kids of threats from the other side. Good opportunity for this girl to find a good lawyer, sue, get paid, and move on. USC would rather pay out this way, they have the money. But they don't wanna deal with her anymore it seems. As Californian, I see it as a win if I get paid out. If you care about causes and have integrity and all that, then it sucks for her.
  • I couldnt care less about matters NOT in our country; it’s NOT our business. In America, this woman has Freedom of Speech! For them to sanction her is an absolute mockery of what we stand for! Let her say what SHE wants to. It is not your place to worry about the affect it will have. You DO NOT have the right to take away HER right!
