Since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion hundreds of thousands of men have volunteered to defend their country against the Russians. Now one and a half years later Ukraine needs to fill the ranks through conscription. Some Ukrainians are refusing to fight and looking for ways to leave.

DW’s Max Zander filed this report from the southern border with Romania. We also hear from Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Lisa Yasko, and military analyst Frank Ledwidge in Oxford.

"Unfortunatly, we have to fight to the death!" Says the woman, who sits save behind her desk and doesnt have to fear to be drafted for the meatgrinder

I fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I totally agree with the guy who doesn't want to fight. I will no longer fight for those who sit in power making money from the death of young men for their own personel gains. I have seen so many young men die for nothing because politicians cant do their jobs.

I left illegally thru Moldova, I spent $4500, best decision in my life

No democracy in Ukraine, only death, corruption and poorness. I want to leave Ukraine, but i can't. I have not seen my family for almost 2 years....
  • @Scapestoat
There's something uncanny about two woman talking about how terrible some men are, for daring to refuse to fight.
  • @lambertmkz
Ukrainian member of Parliament Lisa Yasko saying that they will fight to the end while she's safe behind a desk is the coldest thing I've heard in a long time. Politicians all over the world are the same; heartless & inhuman!
  • @Arag0n
Ukrainian politician: "we have to fight for our freedom" Ukrainian politician: "you don't have the right to choose" 🎤
  • My Ukrainian friend told me the manpower situation is so bad that there are press gangs roaming the streets and snatching up young men. Only way to be safe is to never leave the house
  • She seriously said that there's ZERO TOLERANCE of corruption in Ukraine 😂

Sitting comfortably in another county, fancy hotel, water, electricity, everything knowing you will never be the one to hold that gun on the frontline it's easy to say the words "we are willing to die for this country." see the life she is in.... We have to fight till the end😂😂
  • I want to say as a Ukrainian who knows the situation as it is, not as the girl at the table tells it! If you have money, you can leave or sit at home and you will never be drafted, if you are poor or ordinary person, the only chance not to be drafted and stay alive is to sit at home in a ban and not even go out to the store for groceries. I assure you all the system is corrupt and corruption in Ukraine will not be overcome!

How do they imagine victory over a country with nuclear weapons? People are dying because of the ignorance of a few politicians...
  • @user-hd7fg7ih7i
"We have to fight to the death for our children" = "men have to fight in the freezing cold fields to their death while I sit in my pillow in my heated office"
  • Everyone thinks they are free until they realize there are people in power who believe they own you.
  • @BeraubtWerden
Easy for a girl who are not burdened to die in a war to say things like that
  • @Butterflywm8
What do you mean illegal crossing the border? You as a journalists have to raise a major issue which facing Ukrainian men since war started - no human rights! They locked in a country as prisoners in a time when Ukrainian government became incredibly rich, corrupt and cynical. People simply do not want to die for oligarchs country Most of parents forced to leave the Ukraine with sons before their 17th years. I’m a mother and I do not need the Ukraine without my son life
  • @slipslop9990
I love watching people living in safe environments and are born with silver spoons in their mouths blaming others for not wanting to fight in their endless wars
  • @calichenj
I don't understand why Ukrainian men don't wanna die for American and European Oligarchs. It's beyond me 🤔
  • @amadd5641
My father always said to me, "Don't ever go fighting for those bastards". At the time I would have, but now that I am older, I see what he meant, and I say the same to my son.
  • @Remedy40370
Why doesnt Lisa Yasko fight on the front lines?
