The mustache aesthetic will always haunt me because I remember jokingly saying I liked it in front of my aunt and she took me seriously so she always bought me mustache themed stuff for like a year or two after that.

I think the “art hoe” aesthetic was another precursor to cottagecore. I remember desperately wanting a yellow kanken, Van Gogh socks, and one of those instant Polaroid cameras
  • i feel like every year we have an weird object obsession 😭 like there was cactus, pineaple, lama ...
  • You used a photo of me from when I was an anorexic heroin addict. I can't believe it circulated on Tumblr so hard. It had to have been pulled off my Myspace profile because I never got into Tumblr. Those were some of the darkest days of my life. I look back at those old photos and shudder. I'm not mad at you! I just have a weird moment when I see my photos resurface.

imagine if global pandemic happened back in the mustache era, and every other face mask would have those mustaches printed on it. now let's take a moment to be thankful that never happened

if i remember correctly, the mustache obsession happened around the same time as the owl obsession-- like just owl necklaces, owl earrings, owl plushies.
  • one thing i am really happy about is that in recent years people have started shipping the i'm not like other girls girl and the girl she's comparing herself to - the pictures at the end of the fangirl section. they redraw the edits and draw them as aesthetically opposite girlfriends who are so supportive of each other and i fucking love it

i am also a proud member of the "used to want to be a pastel goth so bad when they were younger but also were literally a kid and could not afford it".
  • @CheyenneLin
a moment of silence for everyone who drew mustaches on their finger with sharpie

I distinctly remember being in a Claire’s in the 2010s with my best friend, and there was a whole rack of mustache items. I remember finding pink shutter shades that had a plastic mustache attached to a chain on either side that would dangle over your lip when you wore them. What a wild time lol

core memory unlocked omfgggg. on my last day of eighth grade, circa 2013, i was wearing my knee high converse with those split leg checkered hot topic jeans, my pierce the veil shirt, and a ton of those rubber bracelets. after the graduation speech me and my friends ran around like idiots shouting the lyrics to "na na na" by mcr and signed each others arms instead of the yearbooks. we drew mustaches on our index fingers and held them up over our lips so it looked like we "had mustaches". i remember the girl i had a crush on was wearing a tardis shirt, galaxy leggings, and had a mustache necklace. the next day, first day of summer, she invited me over and showed me tumblr for the first time on her living room desktop computer. then we kissed. for a few weeks we "dated" - as much as 13 year olds can date with no drivers license LMAO - until our parents found out. elise if you read this i hope you are having a great life
  • When I was younger I used to be a “not like other girls” person and turns out I was right! I am not a girl.

Shout out to a girl I knew in 4th grade who told me the one defining trait of a hipster was that they eat toenails

Tumblr gets shit on a lot but honestly, when I was on the lowest of my life as a queer tween in a country where you could be killed for being queer, it introduced me to fandom culture where I met a lot of friends, learnt about mental health and self care and found other queer people and communities and really understood myself. It has it's flaws, but I think it's done so much more good than bad.

Five years from now, we'll see video essays on the evolution of the TikTok Girl
  • My mom was born in the 1960s, and was into the original grunge style. So when I developed what she called “a bohemian-grunge style,” she was a-ok with it. Heck, she was the one that introduced me to wearing combat boots with dresses 😅
  • @abbyb010
the grip that the indie grunge aesthetic had and STILL has on me. i can’t escape it.
  • @harmoniass
god, the mustache era really did feel like a fever dream. i remember being obsessed with them because my older sister was the tumblr girl, so naturally i copied her. i literally had a mustache themed birthday party when i was like.. seven i believe. absolutely wild

I remember that there was a tattoo parlour near my first apartment that was doing a one day only free (or something cheap idk) finger moustache tattoos and I was all “fuck yeah I’m gonna go” and then for some reason I decided to have a nap first and ended up missing out. For once procrastination saved my ass.
