We use a Norwood hd36 portable sawmill to make nearly all the materials for this build from locally sourced timbers.

We use ash, cedar, and pine for most of the structure and siding.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

Just wondering if you have enough air circulating under the mattress so it doesnโt get moldy. Maybe make a very low latticed platform for underneath it.

Secret to keeping the cooler cold longer. Do not use regular ice. I freeze water bottles. As they melt, you then use the water. And i dont buy small water bottles. I use flavoured sparkling water at home. When they are empty, i fill with tap water and freeze. The larger the bottle, the longer they last. 2 liter pop bottles would work great. Love your work. โค
