This is the fifth episode in a mini-series, introducing you to some of the birds I work with.

Introducing the smallest bird that I currently work with. He is just 3 years old and homebred. Hiccup is a Little Owl, the UK's smallest resident species of owl. Even though the weather is rubbish at the moment I find ways to keep him entertained!

  • "Like throwing a paper bag in the breeze when he tries to fly" is possibly the most savage burn I've ever heard applied to a bird of prey. Poor guy. :D

8:14 - "A lot of people say how angry these little guys look. Unfortunately that is just his face and he can't change it." Hiccup: [winks]
  • "He looks like a pom pom." An impossibly cute angry looking pom pom. I'd love to hear more about the body language of birds.

"Unfortunately, that is just his face..." Awwwhhh he's cute.

I love how he doesn't even wait for the fly command. He's just like "You are too far away, don't worry....I will come to you." 😍
  • “Unfortunately, that is just his face and he cannot change it.” He could not be more adorable. Thank you so much for your work with these magnificent birds and for your wonderful videos. They do our hearts good during a very difficult time in the world. 💜💜💜

Hiccup says “ why do you keep plopping me over there, when I want to be over here!” What a cutie patootie !

I did not even notice that Hiccup looks angrily, I have learned by now to look at the chest, feathers and movement, unconsciously.

"If you only weigh 170 grams, you have very little option in the wind." Wisdom to live by.^^
  • Official explanation of his name: A near miss at being born Me, an intellectual: Clearly named after Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, Viking chieftain and Dragon Rider

Topic Idea - "Bird Body Language" - you talk about how you an tell their mental state by their physical state... Other signs such as health or illness. Its always a joy to see how you understand and care for your birds - From birth and through life. You're a wonderful "bird mom" :)

I used to go and visit a cute little owl in an old abandoned plane near to where I lived, it was so beautiful. Seeing them so closely is so nice, interesting and helpful knowing about them too. Thank you for being such a wonderful caregiver to these beautiful creatures, you do such a great job, and are so caring with all of your animals, you can tell that you truly love them and care about them. Thank you again for sharing this. 🤗
  • Hiccup looks like a pompom. An adorable little hooting pompom.
  • @NewMessage
The little guys always have such a serious glare on them. Just like when you go down to the pub.
