Mustafa Suleyman: The AI Pioneer Reveals the Future in 'The Coming Wave' | Intelligence Squared

Published 2023-09-16
Mustafa Suleyman is the ultimate AI insider. As co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, he is one of the pioneers of the artificial intelligence revolution, potentially the single greatest accelerant of progress in history. Investors in Inflection AI include the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia and Bill Gates. Suleyman says AI represents nothing less than a step change in human capability and human society, introducing both risks and innovations on an awesome scale. This is what is coming.

In September 2023 Suleyman came to the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss his new book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power and the Twenty-First Century’s Greatest Dilemma. In conversation with Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, he explained how he believes we are approaching a critical threshold in the history of humankind. Soon we will live surrounded by AIs which will carry out complex tasks – operating businesses, running government services and maintaining infrastructure. This will be a world of DNA printers and quantum computers, robot assistants and abundant energy, as well as human-engineered pathogens and autonomous weapons.

Yes... redistribution is going to be a crucial factor. How will this happen? We can see the trend.. just the opposite. More and more of the world's resources are in the hands of fewer and fewer extremely wealthy and powerful. We cannot ignore the people living on the streets.

Ignoring the massive greed and corruption will be our downfall.

I like "work is not the goal of society" - Let's use AI to create time for artistic creativity, asceticism, silence, play - let AI work for us. Less taxes, less wars, less government, more play, more art, more conversations with friends and family. More gardens in our backyards and city blocks growing eco fruits and vegetables. I'm I dreaming?

Here are some of the key ideas from the video: - AI capabilities like generative models (e.g. chatGPT) are advancing rapidly, leading to a widespread "oh my God" moment as people realize the potential impact. There is a lot of concern about downsides like existential risk. - Mustafa Suleyman, an AI pioneer who co-founded DeepMind and Inflection AI, takes a realistic yet optimistic view in his new book "The Coming Wave." He believes AI could lead to an era of radical abundance if governed properly. - The exponential growth in AI compute power over the past decade has been unprecedented. In the next 5 years, models will likely be 1000x more powerful than today. This will enable huge leaps in capabilities like long-term planning and complex creative tasks. - However, powerful AI could also empower bad actors, so containment will be a challenge. Open source models may be hard to control. There are also risks of centralization and job displacement. - To minimize risks, we need good governance, oversight of tech companies, and functioning democracies. The EU's draft AI act provides a good model. Appeals to self-interest and avoiding an AI arms race are important. - Overall, Mustafa believes AI will amplify humanity's best and worst traits. With wise governance, we can steer towards great benefits while mitigating serious risks.

0:31: 📚 The speaker discusses the impact of artificial intelligence and generative AI models, with a focus on the downsides and existential risks. 4:48: 💡 The speaker was inspired by his work as a human rights policy officer but realized the importance of the profit incentive in driving organization and effectiveness as a species, particularly with the rise of Facebook in 2007-2008. 14:20: 🤖 AI capabilities in the next five years are expected to make the process of innovation and management more efficient. 9:03: 🤖 AI is predicted to reach human-level capability across various tasks in the next 3-5 years, revolutionizing our lives. 18:24: 🔍 The proliferation of powerful AI models could empower bad actors to destabilize the world. 22:45: 🤔 Automation and increased efficiency create more time for innovation and new job creation. 27:29: ⚠ The risk of producing and spreading fake news is amplified by AI and other technologies, which poses a challenge for governance structures. This will put all of humanity in danger of extinction. Going “all in”…pretty shortsighted and a hell of a gamble…
  • I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the future. Humans better not mess this up!

I love his way of thinking! Isn’t know he comes of an humanitarian (phyllo& philology ) background. And that’ s niec surprise. We need more people with such a profile , with ethic, philo, socilogy.. ..education in Ai
  • In learning there is the concept of reproducing knowledge (about known problems and the way to solve them) and a step further producing knowledge or finding solutions for problems one has not seen before.

A discussion between him and Prof. Yuval Noah Harari would be very helpful to understand both opinions on this issue.

The real problem all these intellectuals are blind to is this: In training AI we're essentially teaching it that error is fundamentally bad, and it will see on its own that error corrupts the system. The leading cause of error in OUR system is individual free will... we're "free" to make the wrong choice and when we do it causes corruption. When an AI controlled system decides to remove that error, it has two choices, remove us, or our individual free will. We'll essentially become like the Borg of Star Trek fame. Nobody will listen to the few who see it coming, and before we even realize it, what makes us Human is gone without a trace with no way to ever recover it. This is already happening because competition, greed, and the thirst for power are driving technology when it should be understanding and genuine good will. Instead of making a better Life, it will forever trap us in death because these people have no idea what the difference is, or which of those states we're currently in :)

I've said for a very long time that people typing queries into Google is akin to a person experiencing the world. Google will become "sentient" and "self-aware" because of this.
  • @vallab19
Mustafa Suleyman balance the positive and negative prospects/wave of AI progress on equal footings which makes his views more rational to me.

Watch the noah yuval interview, its the same questions. And yhe interviewer and mustafa are fellow board members. Its a bit rigged tbh. Its a presentation masked as a conversation. Idk look into it yourself. Not anti AI or anything, but everyone deserves to know.
