Watch this if you are feeling stuck

Published 2023-04-24
During a business conference call with about 30 young entrepreneurs, we discussed who we can become, and one woman asked the question, "Can a person change?" I believe the answer is yes, but I know some people disagree.

The reality is that if you do not believe you can change, you will not change. If you are convinced you can change, you will change. It's all about mindset. Carol Dweck's book "Mindset" explains how some people have a fixed mindset, while others have a growth mindset.

People with a fixed mindset believe they have a limited amount of intelligence, talent, and potential, and that they cannot change. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset believe that people can change, grow, develop, and transform. How you think about others is the best mirror of how you think about yourself.

I am convinced that people can change because I changed. I am not the same person I was at 16 or 26 or 36. I have changed in so many different ways, fortunately, in the direction of the person I wanted to become. If I had not believed I could change, I would still be the same person.

If you cannot change your mind, you will not change. You have to change your mind with intention. The moment we move to self-awareness, we have begun the journey of change. Pain is sometimes the only material that will convince us to change. Without pain, we stay the same. Without pain, we're not motivated to change.

There has to be a breakpoint where the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. The moment you're sick of staying the same, the moment you're done with the status quo, that's the moment where you have the fuel to make the choices that will bring the change that you long for. One of the most exciting things in life is to realize that we human beings are designed for change.

Not only can we change, but we must change.

  • So good. I feel like the “stuckness” we feel and the inner vacillation of whether we can change is really deeply rooted in fear. That our feeling stuck or feeling we can’t change is really because we’re afraid to make a decision and take action. Easier to postulate about our limitations rather than act courageously. It’s why I love these conversations- thanks Erwin for sharing your depth & insights.
  • So so good. The pain of remaining the same is greater than the pain of change 💯 ✨️ Thank you!

So good! 1:23 “how you think about other people, is the best mirror about how you actually think about yourself.” - I didn’t really buy this notion on your sermon on the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25) relative to the lazy “servant”, but it makes total sense to me here, and reminds me of one of the songs from “Les Miserables” (the musical) with a character who doesn’t want to believe the person he’s confronted with is a changed man.
