Was Oblivion as good as I remember? - My analysis after an 8 year hiatus

A long-winded rant about caves and cave-like entities that loses all credibility at the end when I call the game 11 years old instead of 12.

I wanted to revisit my old favorite to see if it's as amazing as I remembered it being, which led to 45 minutes of main story, guild and general mechanics evaluation. Please understand that I still love the game, and that this is all my opinion.

I played Oblivion for 70 hours before I remembered that I had to deliver an amulet for the main quest.

I was a little kid when I got this and I played it for like five years because my parents had no money to buy me other games and it will always hold a special place in my heart
  • I remember being absolutely blown away when I first played Oblivion in 2006. It was the most incredible game I’ve ever played up until that time and it just gave me this sense that I was actually in that world. I remember being super concerned with Jauffre and Baurus because I grew attached to those characters lmao
  • Man, Morrowind was my jam back in the day! When I heard Oblivion was dropping soon, I was hyped. I remember reading about it in a magazine since I didn’t have internet back then. The article talked about all these cool new features, like the radiant AI system. It sounded revolutionary! When Oblivion finally came out, I was blown away by how NPCs acted like real people, eating, sleeping, and all that. Sure, there were some funny glitches, like nobles chatting with beggars, but the quests were top-notch. The Dark Brotherhood line? Absolute gold. Yeah, the graphics weren’t the best, but mods helped fix that. What mattered most was the writing – and Oblivion nailed it. If you haven’t played it yet, give it a shot. Good writing is hard to come by in modern games, but Oblivion delivers.

"I've fought mudcrabs stronger than you" - guy who wasn't stronger than me

Important Note: Martin Septim is voiced by Sean Bean. Sean Bean had to die even in Oblivion

The oblivion gates, dungeons and caves sure did paint the future of what is to come

Oblivion was the first real, in depth rpg I played growing up. I got myself so hyped up to go through the first gate, giving myself a pep talk and everything. I run towards the gate, ready for any manner of craziness, I run up aaaannnnddd... phase right through it. I didn't realize you had to use the action key to go in 😂😂😂
  • The thing I miss the most about Oblivion is the unique and beautiful atmosphere created by the music
  • "so that's it, it's down to you and me. I know i'm no killer, so AAAAUUUGGGHH"

Best part of the mansion murder party is you can make everyone love you. I made everyone love me and convinced the red guard that the old woman was the killer. Since it was just us three and he thought I was his best friend he killed the old lady. It felt completely unique at the time and made me fall in love with elder scrolls

Morrowind was what introduced me to the series. I loved that game, but Oblivion absolutely blew me out of the water. The quests were phenomenal and made me sink so much time in the game. My biggest problem though is the skill system and also the personality system
  • 5 voice actors for the entire game. Guards with insane detection system.
  • "So long as you arent a wanted criminal you are welcome." Is literally the Grey Fox and has murdered dozens of people for the Dsrk Brotherhood

When Oblivion came out in 06 I was blown away by how amazing the graphics were combined with the legendary game play, I played it pretty steady for at least 2 years on and off with Crysis 😂

This is the only game I've ever played where I've set my alarm early so I could get up and play for an hour before going to work. Never played a game that hooked me like that since.
  • One thing I loved about the mages guild is that you could essentially start a war between them and the local guard population because they'll protect you, a literally new member, to their dying breath
  • @DisKorruptd
my favorite Mage's Guild quest was the one where they send you to get a ring of burden from a well... even if you're an Argonian... that's right, the genius tried to drown... an Argonian...
  • @skjaldulfr
It would have been a good payoff if the final boss in the Arena was Owen's undead grandma.

Those Oblivion gates are the thing I hate the most about Oblivion. Not only they are so damn tedious because their pattern is almost exactly the same every time you enter them, the monsters that you encounter are bullet sponges and I remember wasting a lot of health potions on them. On top of that you are forced to close them all to finish the game and it makes them even more frustrating. I overally love Oblivion for its side quests and interesting locations but those gates will haunt me forever.
