The "indicator" organisms can function like the canary in the mine. Their relative populations can impacted before effluent performance changes are noticeable. This way you can conceivably prevent an upset instead of reacting to one.

Mixed liquor concentration is the amount of solids in a Mixed liquor sample. The last two can easily be defined by performing a Google search on these terms.
