Empathy? Depends on which human culture you observe. Some cultures see dogs and cats as pets to love and protect, while other cultures see them as nothing but food or an object to abuse and torture.

It would be nice but definitely an alternate reality as any one who has advanced that far would class us as animals. We will still need people in the future to be able to fight but not with ourselves or we will stay animals until that changes. I enjoyed the story though it's full of wishful thinking.
