Chikungunya fever: clinical features, diagnosis and treatment

Published 2018-07-27
A decade ago we thought that Chikungunya was a tropical disease restricted to the rain forests. However, after the 2007 epidemic in Italy and later in the Reunion islands, this dreaded condition has now spread to the Carribean and the Americas.
Its an arthropod borne alpha virus which causes fever, polyarthralgia and arthritis. There could be serious complications in the adult such as meningoencephalitis or GBS as well as in neonates.
This presentation discusses in detail the clinical features, diagnosis and management of Chikungunya fever. A detailed discussion of its complications is also included.

I got it while in the carribean island of Grenada during the month of August. It was so strange! I was walking one afternoon and, suddenly, I felt I couldn't move anymore. I slowly walked back home and I lied in bed. A very high fever hit me. I was no used of fever, and definitely not so high (41 degrees C). The fever last 3 or 4 days. I was completely paralized, making even going to the toilet very painful. I had internet luckly, and I checked for natural remedies online. I found that the juice of mashed papaya leafs helps alleviate ciq.'s syntomps. So I did. A friend brought to me the leafs and I smashed and drinked the bitter juice. Other than that I don't recall eating at all. (I was also eating fruitarian at that time, and my body and immune system was very good). It worked. The fever stopped and I slowly started to move again. The most difficult part was the joints pain. It took me months to a year to completely recover from it. (I decide to flu back to Italy at that point). If I can pass a tip, use mosquito spray repellant and mosquito nets in your house and beds, at all time, if you stay in tropical countries. That also helps! 😊
  • I once got this when in Brazil near Recife. My girlfriend at the time suggested that my blood vessels had exploded throughout my body. I remember having intense headaches, fever and fatigue. I was fortunate enough to recover in about a week. Also, at that time, mosquitoes no longer wanted to bite me. I suspect they could sense that I was infected.
