Another ENDURA w/ Lock Problems

Published 2015-05-18
My Japanese made Spyderco Collection include:
Pacific Salt
Karahawk
Matriarch 2

The Matriarch & Salt have a little up and down but not like my Endura which is really pronounced I'm going to return it.

Knife industry quality control is all over the place. There toy manufacturers that make products with less error. No one should defend the knife companies. It should be expected that knives of all things be better inspected.

got a steel will gekko 1500. glad the lock a fractional play. tells me the lock is fully engaged. and when i cut with great force the lock bar dose not wedge upward. fantastic knife.
  • there is no folder that would not have a slight up and down play... even my cold steel voyagers has some. if you dont believe, push the knife tip into wooden table top, grip the handle, and move your hand back and forth, and you will hear that clicking sound.

Every lock back knife I've ever had and seen has slight up and down play. It has to because of mechanics. The lock has a square piece that fits into a square cutout in the top of the tang of the blade. It drops into it, so there would have to be a LITTLE wiggle room, like with OTF knives, they have to have play for them to work. This isn't really a "problem" the knife is perfectly safe, every one I had was anyway. That lock has a long way to travel before it comes close to failing on you.

I'm not one of the spydie shills who thinks spyderco can do no wrong, but so far as I can tell what you're showing is that the blade and lock bar are set in pivots which aren't a perfect fit down to a few thou. This is not only normal, but expected. The amount you're showing is so minimal. If the knife still passes the spine whack test (which they're all tested for) I wouldn't call it a defect.
  • I've owned maybe 20 Spydies, really like the Sage's/Para's, but these surprise me. Thought Spydie had better qc than that?? I have 10 Para's and they have great lockup, don't understand why qc has gone down.
