1972 U.S. Open Film: "Jack and Pebble Beach" | Jack Nicklaus Lifts the Trophy at Pebble

This is brilliant! The elegance of the game is timeless!

I played there in mid April 1982, just a little over a month before Tom Watson’s historic win in the U.S. Open over Jack Nicklaus. The green fee was $65 with a cart. To provide some perspective, you could play Spyglass for $22 at that time. It was pricey enough that I asked the guy I was paired with if they thought my wife was playing as well. When I came back 10 years later with a buddy we didn’t even play Pebble because it was too much. I don’t even remember how much it was but probably approaching $200. We played Spyglass and Monterey Peninsula Country Club instead (which were both in the rotation for the Crosby Invitational). At MPCC we were paired with NFL referee Jim Tunney, who was a member, and the Assistant Pro, Ducky O’Toole, giving Tunney a playing lesson. Tunney was as classy as you would hope and Ducky was a character, but helping us with our games at every point. We bought him a couple of drinks after before he was off for another playing lesson. I remember he told us that for the prior 18 months his job was basically to play Pebble Beach with potential sponsors and other big wigs prior to the 1992 U.S. Open. I remember thinking at that time and to this day that whenever anyone refers to their “dream job” I think Ducky probably tops them. Later we had drinks at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and watched players coming in from a balcony overlooking 18. We both agreed at that time we should have spent the money and played PB, but 25 years later I’m not so sure because of the fun we had playing with Jim Tunney and Ducky, who was both a great guy and great player. He told us a story that the first time he met Tunney was at a club Christmas party and Tunney shook his hand with a hundred dollar bill (a fair amount in those days). He said, “I hadn’t even done anything for the guy and he dukes me”. What a great trip. Unfortunately my buddy is now disabled and can’t play golf or even travel anymore so we can’t go back but what a memorable trip, including a spur of the moment limo ride with the wives along the 17 Mile.

The only footage i have been able to find of Cesar Sanudo playing golf! Thanks for posting! Comparing Jack and Tiger is like comparing an Artist Nicklaus to a house painter Woods. They both use paint , but Jack just looks like he is creating a work of art. Tiger looks like he is working.

There is a video of a split screen of of the situation beginning at 25:40, when Jack is putting for bogey and Arnold is putting for birdie to get the lead. Much more dramatic.Interestingly, Arnold could have won or gotten into a playoff if he just shot an even par final round in every US Open between 1972-1975, even though he was past his prime.
