How Long is Long Enough Before Orchids are Considered a Loss? Leaving The Patio are... #ninjaorchids

#orchids #rescue #fail
After years, in some cases, of trying to get orchids to recover, trying to rescue the orchids that are leaving the patio after this video, I have to say that I am done! I left my tolumnias without supervision for too long and most of them suffered a scale infestation that I only saw too late. 2 years later, I lost the fight! There is a case of fusarium in a cattleya which was detected in the summer of 2023. Then we have a vanda that arrived in the collection with suspicious black spots, possibly a fungus, but I was unable to shift it, unable to get rid of it, so 5 years of trying, I prefer to not have to deal with this orchid anymore. #orchideen #orquideas #orchidcare #failure #sad

Hi Nina, you have done your very best to help these ladies to grow better, please don't feel bad about having to let them now become Orchid Faires. I think most of us do the same trying to save them when they are failing!

Calamities do occur in orchid growing.Climate, pests, humidity, airflow et al.Few losses, but majority of our orchids when they bloom has a chilling, enduring effect Nina.

It's always sad to lose an orchid 😢. I'm sure you provided the best care and conditions you could for them ❤. Sometimes letting go is also a relief when there's a risk of spreading disease through the rest of the collection.

Hi Nina! Unfortunately, they all don’t live forever. You did your absolute best. When I finally give up on one, I think……MORE ROOM! GET ANOTHER! Hope you are having a warmer, drier Sunday! ❤️❤️❤️

Seems as though all plant lovers have a natural inclination to "rescue" their charges when they are in peril from pests, etc. So, you are not alone. The only difference, in my opinion, is the tolerance of each grower to the length of time devoted to this "rescue". When I took a plant growers class years ago at a local agricultural extension office, I recall our teacher telling us that we waste too much time trying to rescue plants that should probably be "destined for the bin" and should just move on. This comment comes to my mind first when I have an ailing plant. And, yes, I am one who tries everything and eventually has to let go of that plant. Thanks for sharing your video with us. Stay safe, healthy and enjoy your beautiful garden and pets.
  • So sorry about your losses Nina, but you did your very best and was very patient to try to save them, scale is such an awful pest and a couple of my Dendrobiums got scale a couple of years back and I managed to get rid of all the scale insects, but then after the scale went away the Dendrobiums came down with a virus with brown patches on them and both died, I am convinced the scale spread the virus, I have given you and your Channel a special shout out on my Collection update tour video coming on this afternoon, thanks so much for sharing with us Nina, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday today XXXX <3
  • 🦒😍💖 Nothing lives forever and a conjunction of situations is often the reason why we are bond to lose plants. Most of the time we could do differently but we won't realize it before it's too late. But if we learn something new, their life made a differance. Gone with the wind yet? Last night the storm was so violent I thought I would land on your patio in the morning 😜😜 It is raining less but the wind is still blowing a gale, yikes !!! Hope all is good at your end, stay warm and safe 🥰🥰😘😘

  • Oh no, Shuttennou?? 😢 That's one of my favorite of the falcata types. So sad about the insolence keiki as well. I wondered if leaving it on the stem might have been a problem. Maybe, if the occasion arises again, dip the water end in wax to seal it off? Anyway, I am also doing some clear out. I am sad that I have to throw out a C. schroederae but, for the second year, the blooms are heavily color broken so it clearly has a virus. Not that you would know to look at the plant, huge, great roots, has never had a growth rot, but I can't ignore the blooms.

Sometimes, enough patience has been spent on plants. BAI!!! I do keep the dead ones though in hopes to film a video about them. Hasn't happened yet with the ones from last year – "somehow", it's not a very inspiring topic
  • If your name in plant circles is known as Doctor Death, then orchids are not a plant you should be trying to grow..... 🧐 🤨 🤔 🦋

I have a question… does the lava rock work the same way as leca? I have never used lava rock and I’m wondering if I’m missing something.. I am fascinated with leca right now.. it is doing great for some orchids that I’m trying to rehab. I purchased all of the orchids on clearance from a big box store. It seems they never watered them after receiving the shipment..
