HOW I GOT MY DRIVER'S LICENSE IN THE US (as an International Student)

Published 2020-08-27
How to get a driver's license in the US as an international student? In this video, I explain exactly how I did it based on my experience learning to drive in Minnesota, where I went to college. From passing my learner's permit (theory) test to passing my road test, it took me three years to finally get my driver's license. And I want to share my experience.

The process in Minnesota is fairly simple. You take a permit test and then you take a road test. But living in a small town without access to public transportation makes it difficult to travel back and forth between school and the DMV. I had to ask for rides, beg people to teach me, and save a lot of money along the way. But when I finally got my driver's license, it was all worth it.

What about you? Are you an international student? What state do you live in? What is the local process for getting a driver's license? Are you already licensed to drive? Do you need to be?

LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS! I read everything and I always love learning everyone's experiences :)

Hi Alex! Thank you for the video! I am an international student as well, and took 2 years to get my license. My story is very similar to yours. I passed my road test in MA last Sunday and I am so so relieved! It's such a great feeling to finally drive w/o relying on anyone. :D Kudos!
  • Thank you for thess informations. They are helping me make plans for my driver's license test.

Alex, I need more storytime on this channel (this might be my favorite video of yours). Also, I forgot how stressful the process was for you lol. Lastly, I have given up on getting a license here. My MN permit expired in June .
  • I'm an American citizen born in New York. I'm Americanah! I find it fascinating that you're an international student with a U.S. license. Go girl! That is great!

Thank you again Alex! You always know what we want, especially me! I'm still in the driver's permit stage in Missouri. Hopefully, I'll get a license by December because my permit will expire in January. I grew up in a small town in the Philippines where we do not have any traffic rules enforced. Yes, it is real! The best way to describe my driving experience in my home country is: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. LOL Drivers not following the rules, drivers driving on the wrong side of the road, people crossing the road everywhere, dogs crossing the road, no speed limit, no traffic lights, no one understands what a STOP sign is for--- it was like an obstacle course to drive in that small town hahahaha. Now that I live in the US, I have to get used to the traffic rules. My main problem is that we own a giant (me exaggerating) Ford truck. Imagine me trying to practice driving in this big truck. Holy cow! I can't even see the parking lines when I try to do head-in parking! What's worse is me practicing how to parallel park using a Ford F-350. I think I just have to rent the smallest car possible to practice and take the driver's test! Have you seen a SMART car? That would be perfect hahahahhaha.

It was quite a long time ago and in another state, TN, but in my case it was the contrary: extremely easy, fast and cheap, a welcome change from Europe where bureaucracy is maddening. First, I was able to use my Belgian driving license during one year, just like that. Then, I got my TN driver license in just one day, with the examination and the tests done and corrected on the spot. It took a bit more than an hour and I just had to pay a nominal fee for the processing. As I lived in a small town, there was no ad-hoc place for that, but just a cabin where State Troopers came a few hours on alternate days to attend this kind of business. I was given the exam, nailed it and then had to pass a few physical tests of vision, hearing, reflexes and so on. Finally I was told that I was successful and that my license would come in the mail and that I could use a slip they gave me until that happened. As I already had a Belgian license for quite a few years, I did not even had to do a practical driving test. All by a trooper in a cabin at the side of the road... Wow... Same with buying and transferring the property of a car or getting an US license plate for my bike brought from Europe. All swift as the Flash at a minimal cost and with zero red tape or bureaucratic hassle. That's the main thing I miss from the US, how "light" all this shit is there. USAmericans often bitch about that, but they have no idea of how it is abroad... Except in healthcare where papers come before healing, but that's a different question, as it's a private business in the US...
  • Alex, you did everything possible to achieve your goal, which in this situation, was to acquire a U.S. driver license. Your presentation is truly inspiring and amazing! Believe it or not, only few possessed the quality of not being a quitter! By the way, what course did you take in college? Did you also graduate with a bang?
  • @kendrick4l511

  • @bempomaa489
Wow in usa it’s free for theory test exam 😱! Most other’s countries you have to pay for it and also it so expensive as well 😭!
  • I am thinking about getting driver license but I didn't get permit yet! I really need to get license tho lol
  • @jrks5835
Hi Alex. So, in the states for you to get a driver's license, you have to take the test first, even though you already know how to drive?
  • @fun_with_AI269
How did you manage the social security card by being a student ?
  • @carphuzl2149
I failed againnn my driver's test two days ago which is so disappointing. This process also tiring. I hope it will end soon and I get the license. Anyway, watching this video is make me simile but aren't you filming new videos for this channel?
