There is a world-famous "cliff village" in Liangshan, Sichuan Province, China, formerly known as Atuleer Village, with 72 families living here. The village as a whole is located in a mountain pass at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,600 meters. The villagers walk to the outside, outside the village need to climb the cliff drop of nearly 800 meters over the 13 steps of 218 steps of rattan escalator.
The history of the village can be traced back to 200 years ago, as the background of the time was full of banditry and war in the Central Plains, the villagers came to find this place in order to find a peaceful place to escape from the world. Due to the fertile local soil, the villagers eventually settled here, away from the turmoil of the outside world, their own self-sufficient heirloom life for nearly 200 years.
As it is located on a cliff more than 1000 4 meters above sea level, and the vertical distance from the ground reaches 800 meters, the village has no road from the top of the cliff to the foot of the mountain, and the road connecting the village of Atulel to the outside world is 17 rattan ladders. Villagers have to climb the ladder to get in and out of the village, so the vertical distance of up to 800 meters on the cliff climbing, the danger can be imagined, over the years this road from time to time villagers fall and even death.

I feel a huge basket elevator can be made using ropes, rocks and wood or metal bar to make travel easier and safer. Very cheap to build. Learned it from my treks in the mountains of indonesia and malaysia. How to build: 1. install a 2 horizontal wood or metal bar hanging at top of mountain with 2 meter distance from each other. 2. The 2 metal bars or wood has 4 holes in them. 3. Rope is inserted on each of the holes perpendicular with each other. 4. One pair of rope has a basket it in filled with rocks. The other end has a basket that will carry the people. 5 . Depending on weight of people and size of basket wood platform, rocks are added to the other basket until the weight of the rocks is higher than the weight of the people on the other basket. Basket filled with people below is slowly lifted to the top. 6. Additional bars or wood and ropes can be added for more stability and safety. Safety ropes and lines can be installed in case something goes wrong so people won't fall to their deaths. 7. These structures are usually built in pairs for emergency and safety. Sometimes 2 pairs. One for going up, the other for going down. For this mountain, there's gonna be a lot of ropes. Other variation of this is like a tram elevator or the one with the pulley method.

Wow, they gave us a look into their treacherous lives. What a way to live going up and down steep stairs every single day with heavy loads! Amazing that they manage. Though many villagers decided to live lower down the mountain. And may indeed God bless them to stay safe!

  • My anxiety level went well over the chart! My goodness. Hats off to these people. And they look so calm climbing up and down. It made rather dizzy just watching this video!
