A stolen Range Rover/ Land Rover makes for one happy former owner.
  • My car is thief proof, it's stick shift with a kill switch. Side note: I'm the switch.

First you get robbed by the dealer..then you get your car stolen.. talk about a bad day..
  • The Toronto police a few days ago said to just leave your car fobs out on your doorstep so criminals don't come inside your house. No joke, saw this on City TV news, what insanity.

To be fair most Range Rover owners are happy their vehicles were stolen.

If the USA and Canadian governments would make it mandatory for auto thieves to serve a 10 year sentence, less cars would be stolen

In Toronto, the Police Services advise the population to be safe and respectful to the theives. They have recently updated their advice from leaving the key fobs close to your front door and now ask you leave the doors to your car unlocked. They ask you to keep the engine running with the Heater on since it is still colder outside. TPS asks you to leave your proof of car insurance and registration in your glove compartment. They also ask that you make sure you have a full tank of gas or full charge in an electric vehicle. TPS asks that you leave a history of the car in your glove box. To be a considerate Canadian, TPS asks you to leave a gift card worth $500 and a Tim Hortons Card on the front seat. Remember, this is a new industry, creating jobs so the government supports all the help we can give the thieves. Thank you Remember, your tax dollars are hard at work. Have a nice day

So glad to finally find a Canadian talking about cars. I just subscribed.

The single best thing auto makers can do is to let owners turn off the hands free operation for the door locks. In other words, you would have to use the buttons on the remote to remotely unlock the vehicle. Some already offer that, but all should have that option. It's not foolproof, someone could intercept the signal if they were nearby when you push the button, but it would still be a big improvement over the hands free system.

  • Thanks Shari! That was an excellent summary of most stolen cars in North America along with preventive actions and solutions you suggested.

Crazy how a $30K vehicle turns into a $50K vehicle at the "stealership". They tried this crap at every dealerships I went to when I bought a car last year but I just kept saying no and/or walking out the door. Eventually I was able to get a great car at a great price as they had to give up on all the extra BS they tried to "extort" from me.

NEVER install an alarm that uses the car fob. ALWAYS use a different fob, this way when they clone your fob and they open the door, Hell breaks out and they will take off.

If cars are being stolen like that in Canada and it's a jurisdiction thing then they need new people in charge of the government. What government would let something like that; fly. start handing out some real prison sentences.
  • @wevibin375
All these manufacturers would have to do is add a "startup sequence" of sorts, that is customized by the owner that has to be input prior to starting
  • @geraldscott4302
I drive Ford Crown Vics. I started driving old ones long before they stopped making new ones.
  • @luckyguy600
Yes, I have a brand-new vehicle. And yes I have and am doing things to preserve my ownership of said vehicle. I live in the 'stolen vehicle centre' just northwest of TO.

I am glad to see that you have listed the "Club". Just because it is extremely "low tech" does not mean it is ineffective against most car thefts. The "Club" is an add-on highly visible protective device that will discourage a number of individuals from trying to steal your car. There is no device nor method that is 100% perfect against a car being stolen if the thief has the means, motive and opportunity to do so. I bought the "Club" in 1996 after witnessing a classmate's car being stolen. So far none of my cars have been stolen since using the "Club". Another, even better, method I saw being used to deter car theft was the removal of the steeling wheel. This method will overcome nearly all attempts by car thieves. What thief is going to carry a steering wheel of the car he wishes to steal?
