Ok no one going to read this, but never use a toaster out of the box, you need to have it go for a couple of cycles.
They put some sort of wax or smth on the heating elements to keep them safe during shipping. That's why it smoked so much and reeked foul. It's the wax evaporating. Manual should tell you how long it needs for it to be safe and oderless -
