Frozen Air Conditioner Multiple Issues

I am on a no air-conditioning service call. As I arrive and look at the unit I find the air handler evaporator coil is all iced up. I shut the unit off and go outside and check the AC Condensing Unit. Ice is outside on suction line until it reaches the compressor. Therefore, I pull the disconnect and test contactor, verifying it didn’t get stuck. Next I go inside and find a zoning panel. Then I find a zone damper that a wire fell off. I fixed the loose wire on the HVAC systems zone damper. I return the next day to find refrigerant charge low. I leak search the unit and locate leak on condenser coil. I recharge the system for temporary cooling. Then sell them a née condensing unit.

  • Hacker is on the same league of champions in the hvac field as other channels on here. How come this man does not have half the amount of subs that them other guys have? Hacker always makes quality videos!

Always good to hear you fixed a problem that has been existing for years. Great job
  • @Ted_E_Bear
The Hacker is great on repairing complex issues !

Nice troubleshooting and being through with looking at all the possibilities for a frozen unit.

Ahhh, the beloved micro channel leak! Dang I hate that stuff. I cannot believe that's the direction the whole industry is going in. Everybody's starting to use micro channel. And that was a beautiful frost ball on the line set. I had one that looked just like that last week. At first when I came around the back of the condos I thought someone had laid a piece of PVC pipe over it because it was so pretty and Snow White .

Wow, sure glad I don't have to work on that one. I feel for you young men. Condenser doesn't look that old, I guess they are making junk these days. I am an old guy who is retired.

I did commercial service work for several years. Last 18 years Ive been working at one large site but I do miss the detective work required to find the issues and dealing with different types of people...

Good find. Life would be so much easier if install crews knew how to operate a Sharpie marker and put a few notes on the air handler/furnace. I know, most of them will never see the equipment again and what they install will never drive them nuts.

Congratulations Bill, so you're the first real HVAC tech they have seen in a million years? Nice work,

Good work Hacker. There on the Zero maintenance program.
  • When customers just yap away “They only go here, I’m serious, like yeah I don’t know how many times they came and they only go here and there I’m serious”

You think maybe you support the armorflex cable with a strap to relieve any tension on the control wires so they don't get tugged loose from the connector block?

My Mac once in a while froze like that one you work on I turn off the compressor because it kept running and power off and on the thermostats and it work again Is that what I suppose to do sir because expert ac guy don’t know
  • @bubcity9448
Could a leaky Schrader valve cause the compressor to not work
  • @caru3257
I did find one with intermittent cooling. The compressor was dirty and the indoor coil was plugged. I had a whole day of work at a storage place as a follow up and another unit had a transformer burned out.

I see where they are phasing out HFC refrigerants. Glad I stocked up on 134a on Amazon for the old Expedition. You know the price will begin to go up now. I recently bought a Chinese made window unit for AC backup to be run by a generator in case of power loss during a hurricane. It warns not to puncture it due to possible fire hazard.

I had frozen coils on mine once and it was because condensate drain was blocked and water leaked onto the AH filter. Usually frozen lines = a refrigeratant leak, low on charge, or bad filter. In my case it was a wet filter.
