Beekeeping | How Much Honey Should You Leave On Your Hive?

Knowing how much honey to leave on your hive means inspecting and looking at each frame to see how many frames of resources are on your deep frames in the brood area. Today, I'll look at all 30 frames in this hive and I'll give it a grade based on their stored resources, telling us how busy the foragers have been. Also, we will mark a forager and evaluate how long she is staying out on foraging flights. This and much more!!

If you would like to inspect your hive with more clarity and guidance check out my Beekeeping Inspection Guide. This is an electronic .pdf download that you can print off and place in your own notebook. This is a must have if you want to get the most from your hive inspections. Here's the link:

  • Mr. Burns your really good at explaining and showing what and how to work with the bees. I can tell you really love what you do and you love your audience. Thank you for what you do. It's done with love.

That frame of solid capped brood is magnificent. You must be proud of that queen and her bloodline!

Another tip for those hot days. I fold up a small hand towel and put inside the front of my vail. To wipe the sweat off my face. Works great. wearing a head band over the eyebrows helps as well. If you are going to be inspecting several boxes in one area, take an electrical source and a fan but keep it a good distance away so the beez don’t get sucked into it. I use an air mover because it is smaller and provides a good air flow. Happy bee sleeping!!!
  • My dad introduced me to bees in 1976. We were bee havers not bee keepers. We ran over 200 hives. Words can't describe how much I have learned from you. Thank you for all your videos.

I am a beginner beekeeper, and I am actually waiting on my 2 Nucs to be available now anytime here in May - beginning of June. My wife & I have taken beginner beekeeping classes and also joined a local Beekeeping Assoc. here in PA. No matter what I have learned so far - it never seems like it is enough & I really appreciate the time you are taking to break it all down & demonstrate exactly how things are done!
  • I really enjoy your videos and love how you always throw in tips about taking care of yourself too! Thanks for all you offer.
  • @user-vk5ws3jl1l
Thank you for all your videos. Basically harvest the super, leave the rest 🤷🏾‍♂️
  • Mr. Burns, I am a better Beekeeper because of your videos. There are 4 Beekeepers I follow and you are one of them. Thanks so much for presenting the information the way you do. They are entertaining, well thought out and just so helpful. Thanks. I’m also going to take your online class
  • All your bee info plus the tip on drinking through the veil has been so helpful!!! Thank you! 🤩🐝 Love your bloopers! 😅
  • You are a big help! This is my first year. My 2 hives are doing really great.
  • Absolutely hooked! Love the videos so much. I'm still learning as much as possible before I get my hives next year. Will be taking your courses soon. Love coffee time as well. The world needs more kind and thoughtful people like you!!
  • @GEEZBEEZ
Great information. Thanks for your videos.
  • David, thank you for ALL the hard work you put into doing these videos! I have a good idea of what's involved and I admire your dedication. I love this one....I really learned a lot about distinguishing a hive that "looks like it's thriving" but is actually not in that great of a shape.
  • @loudimel5068
Thank you I can’t wait getting too many options from the club
  • @RealMav1
I really like your drinking thru the veil tip! Thanks
  • Those bloopers! We create YouTube content as well and the bloopers made me feel better about that fact that everyone must have things like that to edit out 🤣🤣
