SOCCERTOWN USA--AN AMERICAN SOCCER DOCUMENTARY

In the 1870s, Scottish immigrants brought soccer to Kearny, New Jersey. A few years later, they brought it to Brazil. While the game was spreading across Europe and South America, it was being played in the streets, parks, and playgrounds of a small town just across the meadows from New York City... but a world away. And in the 1980s, when the flame of American soccer was flickering, it was three kids from Kearny who helped save it.

SOCCERTOWN, USA is the story of Tab Ramos, John Harkes, and Tony Meola, who grew up with a passion for the game in a country that didn’t share it. It’s the story of the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, when these childhood friends formed the backbone of the United States team that willed its way to famous victories and inspired the generations that would come after.

But it’s also the story of a town – an American town – in which we can see the past, the present, and the future of the world's game.

SOCCERTOWN, USA premiered last year at the Kicking + Screening Soccer Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. The plan this year was to go to some other festivals, then find distribution. World events have… overtaken that plan. Since we can’t travel and show our film – and since there are a lot of people (like us) looking for something to watch right now – we decided to make this “educational cut” available for free. We hope you enjoy it.

Jersey native and soccer player, grew up in Newark. Now I know why Kearny is so competitive 😂
  • Bring back the street soccer, the futsal courts, the parent-less environments that nurture the competitiveness and individual technical skills. The expensive suburban "elite" competitive clubs are not going to bring a World Cup title to the US. But a generation that grows up on the asphalt might.

In 1982 the biggest mistake the "Hooligans" made was messing with Grant Pearson, I was at that game, the more they messed with him the better he would play. Grant thrived on that kind of atmosphere. Just a side note from that year, Kearny's only loss that year was to Freehold Township 1-0 at home and the ONLY goal they scored on Grant in 2 games was a penalty kick.

I'm Scottish and didn't know this story. Very interesting and it was great at the start showing the Scots/American clubs. It's pretty much what we do over here here. If you cannot get to a match for whatever reason, you go to the pub, have a drink and a laugh and sing. Loved this.

This is so good, you should close it down -- i.e., take it down immediately -- and go back to ESPN and raise whatever price they turned you down on, the last time. Now, that the virus is warring, they need good sports stories. And this is not just a good story, but a great story.
  • AMAZING DOCUMENTARY! Soccer in the United States has tremendous history, it's just that people don't know about it. Thank you for expanding my knowledge of the history of the beautiful game in the USA.

I was the production assistant for this film! Working with Kiko and Tom was an awesome experience. So happy to see this has nearly 80k views as of writing. Can't wait to see what else comes from Soccertown Media.
  • iNCREDIBLE! Shows you that street soccer, culture and poverty was the combination to produce players capable of competing against Brazil, Colombia and Italy. A must watch for every US Soccer Fan. Great Job!

I grew up in Europe. Soccer everywhere. I went to Newark, NJ during the World Cup ‘94 before heading to Giant Stadium for a 2nd round game, Bulgaria vs. Mexico. I was also at the semi final game, Bulgaria vs. Italy. I still have my programs and ticket stubs from those games. Loved the atmosphere in that area of NJ, having recently arrived back in the US from living overseas. I was NY Red Bull's inaugural game vs. Santo and a friendly game between Sporting CP (my favorite) vs. Man City in the same year I believe. 'Futebol' as what I called it living in Portugal for 14 years.
