I'm not sure if you'll like this MCM makeover...🫣 | MId Century Modern Dresser | Furniture Flip

Published 2023-10-24
Sometimes vintage furniture isn’t as easy to refinish as you think it will be. That was the case with this MCM piece. It had more damaged than I realized. I loved the clean lines and the unique design though.

After numerous repairs, I was able to start the priming and painting. That part was fairly easy. The top had some weird areas that didn’t want to take the gel stain. I let the gel stain dry for 72 hours and then used a water based stain to layer over those areas. Then I toned the whole top with dye stain mixed with my topcoat. That still didn’t even it out, so I used a glaze and that worked. Whew. Sometimes you just have to layer products to get the look you want.

After a few more tweaks with the drawers, it was done.

The new hardware is the star of the show with this one. I love it! What do you think?

  • Outstanding job! You had challenges that you were able to overcome and that is a win! Plus you learned valueable lessons too so can’t beat that win either. Over all it looks stellar and anyone would be thrilled to have it in their home. Great job, I learned a lot!!

You made this unique dresser into a classy beauty! I think your after is a definite improvement on the original.

You fighting that one nail is just the perfect metaphor for furniture flipping. It's always that one little thing! Good job on this piece!

Excellent as usual! I bought those glue syringes and the drawer pull jig, and they work so well. Another youtuber made a wood "conditioner" for staining with less blotchiness. It is basically 1 T wood glue, 1 T water based polyurethane, and 12 oz of water mixed thoroughly and painted on. It dries quickly and made the oil based stain go on very well. Try it on a practice board.

Wow, looks beautiful! I love that your videos are so informative! Awesome job! 😊❤
  • Wow, we gave the dresser away a few months ago and I have the cedar chest in my shed.
  • Doncha hate it when someone someone attempts a clumsy repair with nails?! It's funny: I'm dealing with an Empire sewing table and the flame mahogany veneer is popping off the curved base in pieces. I was wondering how to handle it--pop it all off and paint, or attempt to reassemble the veneer. Then I found this video...I don't know why it never occurred to me to use painters tape to anchor the veneer chips whole the glue dries. Getting old, I guess! I really like how you gave this furniture a second chance. And thank you for showing me what I needed to know!
