In early 2018, Trevor Maxwell started feeling extremely fatigued and tired. He initially attributed it to normal midlife tiredness however, the fatigue continued to worsen to the point where simply walking up stairs would leave his heart pounding. At age 40, he hadn't had a checkup in years, but finally went to see his doctor. Bloodwork then showed he was very anemic and he went on to get a colonoscopy. Doctors then found a large 4-inch mass in his colon and was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

He opens up about how diagnosis sent him into a spiral of anxiety and depression and how he felt like a burden to his family and two young daughters.

Looking for support, he found purpose in creating a community for men with cancer. Trevor launched Man Up to Cancer to address male isolation in cancer and provide a space for men to open up and bond through shared experiences.

I'm facing a terminal diagnosis and have a young daughter. That line about no longer worrying about being remembered as sick, but as sad , really hit hard. Thank you.
  • Hey everyone, Colon cancer is the most preventable type of cancer. If you have family history, please push to get a colonoscopy. Don’t just have them do that occult blood feces test as it is not a direct indication of lack of cancer, in case of a negative result. I got my colonoscopy done at 31 years old about a week ago. Although the doctor did not find any tumors, she found a 9 mm polyp and inflammation in my sigmoid colon. I’m waiting for pathology now. Don’t trust that 45 year requirement. If I had waited, who knows if that polyp would become cancerous and maybe, I wouldn’t even make it to 45. Get screened early

My nephew died with colon cancer. I never heard of a support group like this. Thank you for starting it up and being advocates for men fighting cancer and giving them hope for time and remission.

I remember how I felt 9 years ago ,no energy full of fatigue and highly anaemic. No cancer thankfully but an abscess the size of a grapefruit which was removed by a Hartmans procedure, totally wrecked inside permanent colostomy………But alive !!!!

Trevor my son in law has stage 3 colon rectal cancer, I'm going to see if he will check your channel or vlog out! Thank you for getting this going to help others in your cancer journey!! GOD BLESS!!
  • Thank you Trevor for turning the spotlight on yourself. I have cancer too and right now I am in remission but the survival rate to the five year mark from date of diagnosis is only about 20%. It definitely was a "life asteroid" for me and my family. I don't remember what I told them or what they said to me. Keep vlogging and keep sharing because we all need to keep the conversation open for men. We are taught to just take it like a man. Prayers and God bless! I see you are still with us FIVE YEARS LATER. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one is ultimately in control of our life. When things go wrong, (as they will for us all), it is not a sign of our own weakness or a lack of strength. No one is guaranteed a perfect life. We are not the center of our own story. Leaning on others takes humility. Resting in Him will bring peace in the midst of the storm, regardless of the outcome. (I was diagnosed with cancer a few years after my husband of 29 years left me; I understand difficulties in life).

Above all my symptoms the fatigue was the symptom that I had that made me know in my heart I had cancer 😢

Thank you so much for this. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 14. There was no internet back then and she must have been very lonely. I'm grateful for people like you who see the need for group support and create it for others. Thank you for being a great person. I wish you health, peace, strength, and love. <3

  • Trevor- you have definitely taken lemons and made lemonade! Listening to your testimony made me cry and smile because you are giving so many men the safe space that they need to go through this difficult time and beyond Lord willing. Bless you, Trevor … I love your wife and family for ‘Loving you through it’ … They knew that you had more work to do!!! Keep surviving! ❤❤❤
