Every one remembers Montana’s and Rice’s performance, but their defense was impenetrable. They didn’t allow a single offensive touchdown. Cincy’s only TD came on a kickoff return.

For those wondering why The 49ers struggled with The Bengals defense, Bill Walsh began his career in Cincinnati as the offensive coordinator. They knew his offense well. In fact The Steelers of the 70’s said that the offense they used gave them fits

This was Bill Walsh’s last game as the 49ers head coach

The 49ers were one of the most dominant teams in the 80s

I remember watching this live. Two things I remember most. #1 Tim Krumries leg injury and that last amazing drive by SF and Montana. Wow. Good game.

Such a defensive game through out 3 quarters. Rice was on the spot on so many catches, 212 yards receiving and a TD, well deserving of MVP for the game. That 4th quarter is why Montana is legendary. Comeback King in the Super Bowl 🏆
  • 11 CATCHES .. 215 YARDS .. 1 TD .. IN SUPERBOWL XXIII FOR THE 🐐 JERRY RICE#80 .. THERE'S NEVER BEEN A BETTER NFL 🏈 PLAYER ..

Joe Montana is always a pleasure to watch. One of the main reasons why Tom Brady gets directly compared to Montana is that in many ways they had a very similar temperament and demeanor on the field. Brady was clearly more demonstrative but when he was laser focused he just looked like modern Montana to me. Cincy fans have to hate the Niners as 2 of their 3 SB appearances saw a loss snatched from the jaws of victory. That last drive was incredible and the John Candy story lives on in SB lore.

I’ve been waiting for the highlights of this game to be uploaded for years. One of the great Super Bowls, and the pinnacle of Bill Walsh’s playcalling along with Montana’s clutchness.

The first Super Bowl with the NBC 6 feather peacock. The last Super Bowl for NBC analyst Merlin Olsen. 17:41 John Taylor almost jumped into NBC’s Don Criqui. 18:09 Great line by Dick Enberg. 20:15 You may never see two head coaches leave the field together again.

88 and 89 49ers were the greatest teams I’ve ever seen. I’d take the 89 team over anyone then or now.

They got the Niners wordmark logo correct finally 👍

Would love to have seen how this game would have played out had Tim Krumrie not had his leg broken. Everything that Cincy defense did stemmed off from the play of Krumrie. HUGE loss for Cincys defense.

2:53 Love seeing Lott plays in real-time. He gave up at least 30 lbs. to Woods and still dropped him. Broke up a pass the next play. What a player.
