48.0 North Stone Parapet

Published 2023-12-09
A parapet is a low wall along the edge of a roof that troops can hid behind. You usually see these in castles. In my case, the waterproofing goes from the roof down right over the wall and the earth would have just followed it right over.

Instead we are adding a low stone wall to extend that edge up a bit above the water proofing to help retain that earth. I don't think there is another name for that, so I am going with parapet. We focused on filming the parapet part of this, but along the way, you can see that we also stuccoed the walls and painted them. In this video, we got the parapet a couple stones high, but later we came back and added a few more courses so we could retain enough dirt on that roof to keep things from drying out.

Here are the chapters.

LOVE this project! Thank you for catching us up on YouTube. I follow on FB, but I really love the videos.

I am always impressed with the colossal amount of work you guys have done. Truly a build of a lifetime. This house will be lived in and loved for generations

This built doesn't stop to surprise me with more and more complexities and technical intricacies:-D. I am in planning phase of my earth covered house, but I wouldn't have such bravery to make it so complex and challenging. I keep the design as simple as possible, actually have spent and still spending a lot of time on making things as simple and straightforward as possible (when it comes to structure; the stuff inside is a different story). Even though a lot of thing is not my cup of tee, I think this is great work on design and execution, really inspiring. πŸ‘πŸ‘

Nice to see you posting again. Been following your build for a long time. I like the belt and suspenders and other belt and other suspenders mutli prong waterproofing approach! I suppose cocnrete is different than conventional building where you want to avoid multiple layers of waterproofing..
  • I’d like to see some updated financial breakdowns of this project.

I admire your re-purposing of materials like billboard vinyl and carpet. I would do it myself if I had a chance. Have you thought about the "design lifetimes" of these or other materials you use. I built my house in 1980 and had to replace the tarpaper on tile roof at about 40 years. If I could do it over again I would have added multiple layers-multiple media as you have. The again, I didn't have the time or money.
