PoE had so little competition that they decided to create PoE 2 to have something to compete against.

POE: Releases 5 full expansions worth of content as a free patch. D4: Releases a new horse cosmetic, reskins some bosses from the campaign, oh, and you need to pay $70 for it.

To put this into perspective, GGG as a company has less total employees than just the D4 team at blizzard. They come out with this league while also working on PoE 2 and they are working on the next league already.

Kingsmarch is the ACT 3 hub for POE2 btw. So according to POE2 lore your POE1 character helped built Kingsmarch.
