People did this with bullet journals. The sub reddit just ended up with people with "pretty" journals instead of actually use the bullet journal to stop procrastinating. It was ironic and idiotic.

I started doing higher-order learning after your videos just as an experiment. It was really hard to let go of detailed notes as I was afraid that I will forget everything. But I eventually really tried to use a couple of words and mostly doodles on a mindmap and really think about connections/relationships & patterns. At first, it took me quite a lot of time but as I did more of that, my brain started getting used to this type of thinking. Long story short, I literally didn't even try that hard and definitely didn't spend lots of hours studying, and got 95/100 on my first calc midterm. So thank you, Justin, you opened a whole new world for me!
  • Pretty notes overwhelm me more, because I have a messy way of taking notes which I know works and when I'm trying to take the notes I keep thinking about how to make them pretty. The extra thought of trying to make it look nice is so much more overwhelming than the process of learning to me. The moment you accept that no one will look at your notes anyways is so freeing and they do what they need to do for you.

I love that Justin's videos use the words "thinking" and "thought" so often. I've noticed that often people are looking for study strategies that will help them learn without having to think or make connections.

  • 00:00:00 Obsession with pretty notes in studying influencers. 00:00:18 Top learners often have messy notes for better learning. 00:00:24 Importance of actively thinking while taking notes. 00:00:29 Writing notes aids in organizing thoughts for better retention. 00:01:33 Skipping the thinking process hinders actual learning. 00:02:33 Creating notes before understanding content is counterproductive. 00:03:00 Effective learning involves understanding, not just creating notes. 00:04:11 Messy notes reflect active thinking and deeper understanding. 00:07:00 Linear notes limit the ability to see connections and relationships. 00:09:01 Starting messy and organizing leads to effective learning.

Pretty notes are pretty notes until the low level learning come to the conversation 😢

This is how I have been studying lately and it evolved naturally. I discovered this while studying (just consider it as a game and you will be able to discover the most effective and your best method)
  • I’ve learned that it’s best follow your brain’s curiosity and answer questions that you have and you’ll retain the information. Even if it’s different from the class you will have a stronger understanding of the concept.
  • 0:17 I love seeing aesthetic notes and I’ve been inspired by them but the ones that were the most inspiring were the ones where each color/symbol etc actually had a specific meaning/function.

PLEASE TITLE THE VIDEO, 'THE PROBLEM WITH PRETTY NOTES'
  • I've wasted so much time in the past trying to colour-code and make my notes neat when I almost never go back and actually read them. It's the process of making them that is useful for me. I love flow charts and diagrams for this reason and then become an active exercise. I do however, still like using colours as a visual aid

Thank you so much I was struggling with this thing for a while now, I get afraid that if I don't write everything I'll end up forgetting it and missing it on exams. so I end up writing my notes for several hours and not actually studying the content I'm writing. This video came for me at the right time😇
  • @dre7256

thank you, Dr. Justin, I just want you to know you are making a big difference in my education, thank you from my heart.

I think the most important thing for me is to understand that the main purpose of studying is the organisation of the given Material in a way that makes sense to my brain. It took me a long time to get this. In some way we have to play Compiler to a foreign language. First translate the material into syntax and semantics you understand and then check if there are any Problems during runtime.
  • @venuscus
i think when you correct your notes many times, and think them through, you appreciate them far more! much more than having linear notes you hardly know :-)
