In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 1 Topic 3 of the AP Government curriculum which deals with the tension surrounding government power and individual rights, especially during the ratification debates on the U.S. Constitution.

This tension is illustrated with two foundational documents: Federalist 10 (written by the Federalists) and Brutus 1 (written by the Anti-Federalists). Federalist 10 argues for ratification of the Constitution by proposing a republican style government as the best way to guard against the "mischief of factions." Brutus 1 argues that by investing a central government with so much power, state power would be nullified and individual rights would be trampled.

I know you get this a lot in the comments but I must thank you for being there during my 10th, 11th, and now 12th grade year. I have a 5 on AP World and a 4 on AP US History because of you, and now with your AP Gov videos on it's way I can only see myself getting similar results, so I can't thank you enough! You're the best history teacher I've ever had, and I haven't even seen you in person!!!!!

majority rule v minority rights - federalists v antifederalists fed 10: violence of factions can be solved with republic (too many factions means too many interest—> compromise is important) brutus: necessary and proper and supremacy clause make central govt too strong
  • @rxoria
if i was asked what political party the federalist and antifederalist views fit with today, would federalists be more modern democrats and antifederalists more modern republicans?
