How to fix high idle and sudden acceleration for the Jeep 4.0 Inline 6. Replaced the TPS sensor and cleaned the idle air control valve. Even after cleaning the IAC, he opted to just replace it. Runs great now! No more high idle and erratic shifting

  • I'm getting P1296 after I replaced the IAC & TPS. Cleaned the throttle body, changed the spark plugs and replaced a broken vacuum boot. Now it runs like crap. Stalls at low speed, stops and deceleration. If I replace the MAP and still stalls, what's next??
  • It's impossible by the laws of physics to have an idle that high without a ton of air coming in. You have a massive vacuum leak. The O2's trump all, so if you check your code scanner and you're idling at 2000 RPM's and the o2 voltage readings are within range, you have to have a bunch of air coming in in order to maintain your ideal 14.7 AFR range. If you have a TPS problem you can easily check by hooking up the code scanner to check just the TPS reading (not looking for codes, you want the reading). It should be damn near 0 without any pedal, and as you slowly increase throttle (vehicle can be completely off for this) the reading should slowly move linearly upwards. If it jumpst from 9 to 30 or is jumping all over the problems you got problems right there. I had that problem recently, and after using QD electric cleaner on just the TPS after taking it out (I figured it was internal corrosion due to my hood vents being right above the TPS/IM area) it went away for a while. I got a new one and after a bit the problem went away, but I have other problems electrically now due to my hood mod. I know I have corrosion inside the under-dash electrical connector since I ran some lines through the firewall by the brake booster and never properly sealed it. I'm going to clean the piss out of it, reconnect, , seal the hole and spray the connector and every ground I can find with urethan sealant to keep them water free. If you live in a rainy spot and have any electrical problems... you need to start checking connectors and grounds, and sometimes wiring harnesses after any severe inclement weathers/trees being felled due to rats lurking around and eating anything in sight. I bet spraying the carb cleaner in the IAC was what fixed the problem, not the TPS. A teeny tiny opening in the throttle gives a 2000 RPM and higher idle, I've seen it. Built up carbon will do that, carb cleaner eating it away fixes it.
  • Mines doing that lately, second time in the last couple years, not nearly as bad as that though🤣 I’m gonna change the throttle position sensor hope it fixes it again.

I replaced my TPS and that’s what CAUSED my high idle in the first place! Grrr. Put in the old one and the problem persists. Bleeping Jeep.
