The Game Boy pocket and its technology has a surprisingly dramatic story, and it was all almost ruined simply due to one port and one game series.

Imagine the idea that out there, there might be a game that should have been a huge success, probably even bigger than Pokemon, but was never released because of someone's decision in a company.
-
I love this series please keep making these Alex.
-
that's Drake Bell in the pokemon ad you used, I just think everyone deserves to know that

Nintendo: We don't need link cables for the gameboy pocket. We should probably keep it anyway though, let's just make it cheaper. Game Freak: Hello there. Look at this game that makes heavy use of the link cable and will be extremely popular. Nintendo: Dodged a bullet on that one.

Cool to see more console-y documentary style videos. Love your channel, dude. You've helped keep me entertained while working from home for the last 20 months. I appreciate it. Btw, I had the yellow launch GBP. I loved it. That and the GBC (I had the purple one at launch) were probably my favorite consoles of all time.

The Pocket (w/ Blue Version) was my first Game Boy. Mine still turns on even after some water damage.

13:20 LOL I had that toy! It's probably still in a box somewhere. Never had enough patience to solve that rotating barrel as a kid. Maybe I should dig it up and finally figure it out.

Gunpei Yokoi did do one more console design after leaving Nintendo: the Bandai WonderSwan. It used an x86 derivative processor, the NEC V30MZ, and a similar display to the Game Boy Pocket. Advancements in boost converter technology allowed for the use of just one AA battery, which provided up to 40 hours of operating time.
-
2 batteries instead of 4 cuts the voltage in half, surely there was some hardware difference in the Pocket to handle that difference.
-
The late-stage success of the Game Boy is so perplexing.

Love your drawing style, especially the shading - you have good control of when to use halftones and solid shades and they're both impeccable. Awesome.

came running to tell you, you are great Alex!!! 💕

Ya vi el que esta en español, ¿Crees que lo veré de nuevo?... Efectivamente, procedo a activar los subtitulos.

Your new video style is absolutely incredible. This is some of the best content on YouTube. Thank you so much!!
-
I watch a lot of Youtubers who advertise curiositystream, but you are the one to convince me to pull the trigger. Good content, brother
-
It's funny if you think about that. Pocket Monsters (lately shortened for international releases as "Pokémon") made the Game Boy Pocket win. It's almost poetic too
-
Yay this series is great! Can't wait for the GBC video
-
Wow, imagine if they actually completely removed the link cable port. The Pocket wouldn't have sold nearly as well as it did in reality.
-
Love your videos on the history! Keep at it!

I love how this vid came out!! super unique and informative, who would’ve known this much happened behind the scenes to the produce the pocket
