Voodoo Believers Explain What People Get Wrong About Their Faith

Voodoo is an ancient but misunderstood religion practiced by millions worldwide. Meaning 'spirit' in the Fon language, the religion centers around nature worship and communing with ancestral spirits. It’s often stereotyped in pop culture, adding to the fear and mysticism around it but even in its spiritual home Benin, stigma around voodoo persists.

Driven underground during colonialism and after independence, voodoo was only officially recognized as a religion in 1996.

We go to Benin's annual voodoo festival to explore the religion's past and present.

As a Haitian I found this video very lacking and only reinforced what some already believe. I just want to say that voodoo or vodou in Haiti where I'm from are just religious practices done for various reason to our gods or spirits. It's neutral just like everything else. People can ask for better health, love, luck and justice. As the priestess explained in the video what people associate with vodou is witchcraft, which is not the same thing. There isn't anything wrong with someone doing that but it isn't the lump sum of what vodou is. It's basically like any other religion and pretty interchangeable with Catholicism.
  • What do we get wrong? There was no explanation of the Voodoo beliefs. The only thing was a coy response related to human sacrifice. This could have delved way deeper to explain what Voodoo followers believe, what they practice, and what we misunderstood. Unlike the title on this piece, I only learned that there is a "Voodoo Pope". Vice - come on, you can do a deeper dive on this topic.

So sad to read the stereotypes in the comments. Here in Brazil, people from religions of African descent (that have much to do with voodoo), constantly face prejudice and persecution. How are we to judge what other people believe? It is important to think how much of the criticism is actually racism that we are not aware of... I'm not someone of that faith or a specialist, but as far as I know, they do the killing in a way that is more "humane" than the meat industry and eat the meat afterward. At least that is how it is in Brazil.
  • Why do I find out nothing about Voodoo beliefs in this video? What they worship, different practices and their meaning, who they worship, is it polytheistic, the history of the religion or really anything that helps you learn about Voodoo? But don’t worry, they made sure you understand the impacts that colonialism had on the religion, just nothing about the religion itself. I was actually excited to watch this because theology is something I find fascinating and I don’t know much about Voodoo, such a disappointment from a once awesome news agency.

I schooled in Benin, and I once went to this Ouidah village for a wedding ceremony of my friend's sister. And the things I saw in the open was scary as fu*k. When I asked my friend's grandmother how these things work and why people believed in it, she said she has no idea how it works but people believe what they see and she told me "be very afraid because everything physical has a spiritual backing".
  • I love my ancestors, they are living through us. I am so thankful 🙌🏾

You don't think it's bad until the devil shows up or demons attack you.

What she's describing about the catholic church and what they did to her people is exactly what the Cathy church did to everyone. She's lucky she actually still has knowledge of her religion. There are many who don't because the church completely or almost completely stomped it out, including European pagan religions.

A human transforming into a bird, converting people’s souls into goats, and eating them. It actually seems just as crazy as it’s portrayed in media.
  • @boogiekush9391
All cults are called crazy until enough people believe in them and then they are called religions
  • Saying human sacrifice is an outdated practice probably isn't a very effective response to stigma.

This is fascinating stuff. I was born and raised in Louisiana, so I was exposed to this from a young age, although as a white Catholic we, of course, were always taught the negative aspects of the religion, and of course much of it was lies. I'm trying to learn now about the real voodoo because I'm a writer of Gothic romance and voodoo is an essential element in many of my stories. But rather than portray it as evil, I want to shed light on the REAL voodoo and show that it's not a bad religion, just vastly misunderstood.

It’s valuable to say in this comment section that most here have seen a very small portion of the human experience. The totality of what has and can occur in the world is more expansive than you all give credit. To the Christians demonizing voodoo, you all allot so much power to your Devil, and fail to take stock of your personal or historical negative attributes and actions. Your faith is built on one of the most resplendent mystery schools in the world, turned into the greatest act of theological repression in human history. Read a bit more deeply of your book, beyond the literalism. We’re all one here. Voodoo is a rich vein of ancient culture that transmuted through the African slave trade perpetrated by European colonialism. You’re bearing witness to some of the last surviving remnants of vast ancient cultures. Don’t disparage what doesn’t fall into your worldview when you have not seen the world. We all bear aspects of this grand story of humanity. Our cultures and differences are jewels to be celebrated. Have a lovely day.
  • Breaking News -- This just in; people have misconceptions about religion and culture. This, and more, at seven.
  • @Mario87456
Voodoo does have human sacrifices, voodoo dolls, and curses on people. We just aren’t getting interviews with those voodoo practitioners who actually do those things. So the stigma is very valid actually.
  • @jjthejet69
Where do i sign up to see a bird turn into a human?
  • WE can go much deeper into the subject. Lets put some respect on it. ASE!
