There was a time when General Motors was the king of the automobile industry leading the world in auto sales, but down the line the company faltered and was left behind. Now, CEO Mary Barra hopes to regain that lost glory. GM is pushing towards an all-electric future and hoping to unseat the king of the EV world, Tesla. Helping them do that is GM’s new secret weapon the Ultium Battery System which is already creating waves in the EV industry.
It is an EV battery that makes all the difference
The electric vehicle industry is a fast growing one. Today global electric car sales has more than doubled over the past twelve months, reaching 6.6 million, compared to just 3 million in 2020. But beyond the fancy vehicles, it is the battery that is the main component. It is like the arc reactor of Tony Stark, the lantern of Green Lantern, the energy that drives the vehicle. Without it, an EV would be basically nothing but a can of useless apps. Unseating the king would be no mean feat considering the fact how Tesla has made several breakthroughs in battery technology including the long awaited 4680 batteries in 2020.
Ultium Energy Recovery
GM’s Ultium proposes to be a real game changer which the company calls Ultium Energy Recovery. The new Ultium battery tech will cover an exclusive range of vehicles like GMC Hummer EV, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Cadillac Celestiq sedan, and Cadillac Lyriq. Ultimately the technology will become standard fare for every current and future electric vehicle manufactured by General Motors.
But can GM’s Ultium truly be that remarkable? Can it lead the roost in the EV industry? Can it take on Goliath Tesla? The company answers yes to all these questions and proving their confidence is a $20 billion budget GM will pour into its electric vehicle production hoping for an “all-electric future" by 2025. It sure looks like a tall order but CEO Barra is confident enough in getting GM back on track with Ultium.
