The brass square is a cigarette box from Japan. Had one years ago when I smoked.

Around 1980 Morton Salt put out a set of four mugs showing their four historic designs. There was also a matching sugar bowl and creamer. I had them back then. 1968 is the year that design was put on their packaging, not the year the mug was manufactured.
