Originally, the Turnpike had seven single-lane tunnels. By the 1960s, severe traffic bottlenecks were common at each tunnel. To alleviate this, four of the tunnels (Allegheny, Blue, Kittatinny, and Tuscarora Mountain) were twinned, while the other three (Laurel, Ray's, and Sideling Hill) were bypassed. The two tunnels in this video are Ray's Hill and Sideling Hill.

I remember those tunnels. Went through them from college in Ohio to home in NYC! Had to spend the night in one during a blizzard! Thanks.

Back in the day some of those extra wide shoulders had picnic tables placed well away from the road. If you were motoring on a budget you brought your own food along rather than patronizing the service plazas, and took dinner or supper at a convenient place.

Thanks for the great video. I love the transition at 17:20. You have really nice children.

Wow you did a great job on the video. Very impressive implementing of old photos.

I live in upstate New York, I'm going to Charlotte, NC at the end of the month. Planning to stop by Breezwood on the way down to bike the Pike2Bike. Looking forward to it.

Hey bubba, like everybody else said, this is an awesome vid! I think it’s great when parents bring their kids out to explore abandoned places like this. Not to many people can say they got to not only see history in person but they got to actually explore them. Fun times bubba. Hope to see more vids of you and your awesome family. Take it easy bubba!!
