How To: Layer Your Own Hair

A super-easy technique I use to maintain the layered look in my hair!

High-quality salon results? Maybe not (especially with my crazy thick hair!). Better results than you'd get at a cheap chain salon? In my experience, definitely! Money-saving? YES!!!

(Sorry there's no sound, my mic on my computer is having problems!)

Notes:
-No, my hair is not an ombre-fail; I just need to find a highlighting kit that looks trustworthy here in Spain! I guess DYI Highlights aren't big here, and there's no way I can afford to have them done professionally!
-Yes, I'm aware that I'm looking at my hair cross-eyed at a few points. Let's see someone else do this without crossing their eyes or slaughtering their hair! :)
I normally set the ponytail further forward on my head (like right at my hairline) and just do subtle layers at the bottom. I also tried setting the ponytail right on top of my head once and got really drastic, chunky layers which took some getting used to, but everyone loved it!

  • How great to watch! I did this 20 years ago. Peeve eying said I was crazy! To just throw your hair in front of you, cut it, and then it's in layers. So simple to know... Everything is reversed. You've got your 'hairdressers-layers-haircut ' And all those years they laughed about me. Thanks soooooo much!!!

Just tried this and my hair is finally the way I like it! I can't even count how many times I've gone to a hairdresser and told them to put layers in my hair and they never get it right. Thank you so much!
  • Holy crap, best haircut ever! I have been SO nervous to try cutting my own long hair and not having it turn out looking like a train wreck. This was PERFECT for me, thank you! May never need my stylist again, except for the highlights/coloring...I'm sure there is a youtube video for that as well!

I loved this! I tried it and my hair looks so amazing. I've never loved a haircut so much thank you X3
  • I've been using this method for a long time and it really works. all we need is patience and some practice.

At about 3:32, the camera goes out of focus. It would be nice to see the finished cut, and how the layers look. I am in my late 50s, have always had long hair, and that's not gonna change anytime soon! This looks like a great way to keep my locks tamed, either in between salon visits, or instead of. Thank you!

Just tried this to sort out a failed home layering attempt and it works a treat! Definitely doing this from now on as it saves on so much money. Can't believe I never knew of it before. Thanks!

I am doing this every time i cut my own hair and it comes beautiful! Not to mention that i have thick curly hair and i'll be afraid to let people from the salon to mess it,like they did many times when i was a teen!I'm always happy with the results and my hair grows back really fast and healthy!

I've been doing this to my own + family + friends hair for years! love how u put it in there about closer to ur forehead & crown for different layers. most of have to figure that out on their own.
  • @dogtreks1
great video...i watched a few you are the only one I see actually cutting up into the hair vertically and not just one cut across which makes layers more blunt..thanks so much! I will post on Facebook with a few pix of my own hair :)

This worked perfectly! I had just whacked off a ten inch ponytail to go shorter and it looked ok, but I wanted something nicer.  Can't afford a salon cut and the cheap places here all had terrible reviews.  Anyway, using your advice I just layered my just-above-shoulder length hair in under two minutes.  Looks great, even my daughter was impressed.  Doing my own from now on. Thank you!
  • so pretty! Thanks for the video. My hair is that thick too, so layers really helps it lay right!
  • If you can get it into a high pony tail and cut straight across, it won't be dramatic layering but it would still be there.

I'm 39 now but read about tis in Seventeen magazine when I was a teen and have been cutting my own hair ever since. Great tutorial and your hair is beautiful! I never thought of holding the scissors vertical , what a great idea!
