October 26, 1967- What an amazing & memorable day that was for us all as the senoir 9th grade class of Barratt Jr. High...

"If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well."
  • Your words are a balm on a wounded soul, even all these years later. Thank you Dr. King.

Many use his "I Have a Dream" speech as their "go-to" Martin Luther King, Jr. speech but his message of the dignity of work makes this mine.

My teacher went to this school she said that dr king stopped in her class and they all went wild and hugged him ! She said one of the students asked him how long would he be there and he said not long she stated he was a short guy .
  • "Don't allow anybody to pull you so low as to make you hate them." "Our slogan must not be 'burn baby burn' it must be 'build baby build!'" Don't hear this much anymore, unfortunately. He always kept his message positive and constructive.

This should be played in every classroom in America on his day

WOW, I never knew most of the quotes we know today are from this speech! Powerful and welcoming. Thank you, Dr. King for your contributions to the advancement of the human race.

Excellent man, be the best at what ever you do that is good.
  • Feb 4, 2022: I wish Dr. King had visited Madison Junior High in ABQ when I was a student in the late 60s. (Thank you for encouraging me.....we all love you still. I agree with you 100%.) I was raised a Catholic and landed up at Liberty University! Still waiting for God to show me the purpose of three (3) master's degrees!? Blessings in the new year! Jeremiah 29:11

A standing O for Dr. King.  Self-esteem. excellence and fighting for human rights.  A prescription for all of us no matter what age, color, or class.  And then to keep on moving no matter how slow the progress.
