He rose out of the despair that he had originally felt before seeking to save Fiona, but I wanted to know more. How did Shrek get his swamp? Who were his parents? What was his backstory? By our standards Shrek's parents were horrible. But remember, they were ogres. That's likely the way they were raised, as were their parents, and the cruelty is to get them used to the harsh treatment they will receive from the outside world.

When Shrek brought up the whole onion layer thing, he actually meant the emotional layers within him. While he's a grouchy and ugly ogre on his outer emotional layers, his inner layers are what he really is, a caring, warm, and friendly person who was forced to have a misunderstood life

In one deleted scene of Shrek, Donkey said someone hurt him so bad years ago, which Shrek responded with “Leave my parents out of this!”

Even the movies've pointed it out Shrek' had an hyperaggressive family; a cankibalistic father; and an entirely 'human' based societhy that absolutely loathes and hates Ogre' species; maybe some for righteous reasons; we never get to look other 'natural' Ogres on the real Shrek universe; except the last movie which was an alternate timeline/reality

Then later on in Shrek Forever After Fiona: Shrek, you have 3 beautiful children, a wife who loves you, friends who adore you, you have everything. Why is it that the only person who can't see that is you?

Shrek had a long lonely life before he met Donkey and Fiona. He didn't have a friend in the world growing up, thats awful

I think Shrek's parents were a bit abusive because Ogres don't know how they raised their offspring. I also know that Shrek said that his father was trying to eat him. I guess Shrek had to go through a tough childhood before the events of the first movie.

Actually there was going to be a 5th Shrek that would’ve explained how his origins and how he got his swamp but it was scrapped in favor of making the 4th movie the last one (for now at least)
