  • I said that Elder McDay and I knocked on doors most of the time. Missionaries lovingly referred to Newfoundland as the Rock or the Isle of Patmos. However we were blessed to perform the first baptisms ever done in central Newfoundland. The Hearns were a family of 8 in Gander that we brought into the church. Our mission president was so excited when he heard the news that he got in his car a drove around Dartmouth NS looking for missionaries on the streets. When he saw missionaries he would stop roll down his window and yell: " They are baptizing in Gander." Elder McDay has become a lifelong friend.

  • Thank you. I really can feel the spirit through the videos you make. I especially appreciated this one. My husband has been a nurse for many years. A number of years ago he went back to school to get his doctorate degree in nursing. (He did a 4-year-program so that he could work during it). 3 years into the program he injured his wrist and had surgery performed on it. He found after that, that he couldn't perform some of the clinical duties needed to be a nurse practitioner. He changed direction and decided to get the doctorate in nursing leadership. This added another year of school, to a total of 5 years of grad school. 2 years ago he graduated. Just before graduation he got a temporary nurse manager job. A few months after that he got another longer term temporary management job that lasted 10 months. He has now been applying for jobs for 14 months with nothing. (I should note that he has his regular registered nurse job that he is still blessed to work at during this time.) We have 5 kids and money is tight and we've more than outgrown our little home. We have a lot of student loan debt. We've been praying for a job for him for months. He interviews all the time, and 2nd interviews as well. It is so frustrating, even though we know the Lord has something in store for him. The timing is difficult to accept. Hearing these stories was healing. Thank you.

  • Brother Merrill, Storytelling is a lost art and you are a master storyteller. I thank you for sharing your skill. There is such a personal touch in the wonderful stories you share. It is totally enjoyable sharing time with you.
  • Thank you, Brother Merrill for sharing these inspirational stories. Truly uplifting! My husband also served in the areas you mention, including Gander. Lots of “dooring” in those days! (1978-1980)

God blesses us daily with miracles.
  • As always, Brother Merrill, excellent stories. The mountain descent story reminded me of an experience I had. Nowhere near the problem and nothing spiritual, but pretty dang, hilarious. Down in Southern Utah I was a ranch hand part time. On this day, I was to take a salt lick up to a saddle near the top of the mountain. I was able to drive my four wheeler quite a ways up. From there I had an old frame backpack that my father used to use. I felt like this would be the only thing sturdy enough to hold the salt lick and not rip through the bottom. Everything went great getting to the saddle. I set the salt lick in an area. I thought there had been other and left and thinking the same thing. I thought there is an easier way to get back down to my four wheeler. Well, I ran into the same situation on top of the ridge. I had a lava rock ledges. One of these ledges was probably about six or 7 feet high and was surrounded by Oak brush. I could see the the ground , so I thought I would just jump. The next thing I knew I was hanging in the oak brush. The frame backpack got caught in the branches. I was hanging about three or 4 feet above the ground ground. The only thing I could think to do was start bouncing up and down and forcing myself to the ground and it actually worked. at the time I could just see them 20 years from that time finding a skeleton hanging in the oak brush by a backpack. 😂 oh the things we do when we are young.
  • It's true the Spirit works through many different mediums. You definitely have the Spirit to be with you. ❤Brother Powers
  • This is absolutely uncanny. I’ve struggled for the past three years specifically in doubt of whether or not I’ve actually heard the voice of the Lord in my life! I’ve had very strong feelings that were somehow words, and when I’ve acted on these feelings, it hasn’t worked out like I thought. In fact, they seemed like complete flops! That story was so personal and real to me though, that I’ll continue to take courage, and strive to keep my promise to be patient in suffering; and to believe in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
