The Whistleblower Who Exposed Theranos | Amanpour and Company

Published 2020-08-07
Remember the name Theranos? It was touted as a revolutionary blood-testing start-up--until 2018, when it came crashing down and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, was charged with fraud. Tyler Shultz worked at the company before becoming a whistleblower about the technology, which didn't actually work. In his new podcast, "Thicker Than Water," he tells his side of the story. Hari Sreenivasan talks to Schultz about that, and about lessons learned as it relates to the hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Originally aired on August 7, 2020.

Good point on how the court system is so costly to whistle blowers, no one can stand up to the corporate law team, our legal system is in need of reform on this.

Tyler is a hero for the ages. Saved millions of lives from Theranos crackpot with his courage alone

Erika Cheung also tooka strong role in the revelation of Theranos. She came from a humble background and don't have the support of family. See her TED'S talk. They are so strong.

I'm sure this legal fight stressed his parents out, but in the end they obviously raised him right. What a sharp young person and a true sense of what's right -- and especially what's wrong.

And this is why Elizabeth and Sunny need to go to jail: for putting a whistleblower like Tyler through so much mental anguish that he actually contemplated suicide. The actual fraud is important, but secondary to the danger to patients and guys like Tyler.

Out of everyone doing book and promotional tours, this guy deserves every penny.
  • @Rickinsf
His grandfather had led a number of high-level investors into Theranos...no wonder he wasn't eager to listen.
  • @whereismyxanax
Tyler's grandfather was worth 10 million when he died this year. He should have paid all of Tyler's legal fees
  • @Oph977
He is a man of integrity. His family should be proud of him.
  • That smiling all the time despite all what he has gone through shows a very positive outlook of his personality :)

I'm amazed with how hard it was to expose this company. No one wanted to see it.

Evil thrives when good people do nothing. It's such a good thing that there are upright people willing to risk their life to expose bad people's wrongdoings. Tyler's parents raised him right. Kudos to him for not buckling under pressure because in the end, light prevails over darkness when he chose to do the ethical thing.

You guys should put a link to Tyler's podcast. He is a true hero and likely saved lives

This is the kind of guy that should be in the government.

"it was difficult to reconcile between what I was seeing and what she was telling me" cognitive dissonance that narcissists use to keep you in their control.

They say your eyes are the windows to your soul. If you compare Tyler’s eyes with Elizabeth’s I’m happy that at least this time the good guys won.
  • He was prepared to bankrupt his parents in order to fight the fight and do the right thing.. against an overwhelmingly unfair court and legal system (and his own grandfather). And people were prepared to break him down to pieces just so they could make a buck (even if it meant people could die). I'm so sickened by the US society

Give this young man an award for scientific integrity! The issue is that all scientists work on an honour system and there are always bad apples. Of course usually peer review and ongoing research takes care of bunk science, but when industry is involved that process is often bypassed.

I truly admired this young man, he has courageous and is willing to fight for what he believes is true. I hope Elizabeth gets what she deserves.
  • @nancydrew1882
Poor Tyler, he must have been really hurt when his own Grandpa didn’t believe him.🥺
