Today on the podcast I have the pleasure of talking to Simon Mills, a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription.
He graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree in medical sciences and has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter since 1977. He was Special Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee 2000 report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
In 2016 he was appointed as Herbal Strategist at Pukka Herbs, leading new initiatives, clinical research, and most recently reducing antibiotic demand.
Within herbal medicine, he established the first Masters programme in the USA, writing seminal textbooks, and publishing research including randomised controlled clinical trials.
I never managed to source the herbs to support my liver prior to my stag party so I canβt attest to those! But Iβll be diving into www.herbalreality.com to see ways in which to increase the phytochemical diversity of my own diet.

My 8 year old *daughter decided to follow her horse around and sample his choice in food . This may not be the exact right way to do this since she was in a horse pasture , but what does that matter to a kid . She came to me excitefly telling me that horses eat a really good salad . She said some plants are salty some spicy, some sour , some sweet , some bitter, some are soft and easy to chew, some taste like fruit some taste really green, some are tough to chew, and some are soft. She was so excited about her little experiment. Herblism has become one of her great interests . By the way her horse lived to the ripe old age of 36, very old for a horse.

I was a tourist in Jamaica taking a tour with a 14 year old boy. Each time we passed a plant, he would tell me the medicinal properties and what it was good for. I asked him how he knew so much about plants. He responded that his family could afford to go to the doctor so they went to the ROOT doctor. Since then I perused making tinctures from the medicinals in my yard. I may become the root doctor before long.

I am Emily and I didn't even know it! Every morning, for 20 years now, I make a huge pot of very strong herbal and spice tea which I drink throughout the day. I select what herbs, spices go in based on how I feel that morning.πΏ

Iβm in the business of getting myself off pharmaceuticals! Before even watching this show I researched natural remedies for lowering cholesterol. I was told by my doctor that the pharmaceutical he put me on I would never be able to come off of it, and no way I could just stop taking it. Guess what? Came up with my own concoction and it resolved my high cholesterol. At annual exam I was told levels were great and did I need a refill? I said no, I stopped taking it a year ago, and never will I ever go back on it.

I've relied on herbs and spices for nearly 50 years. As a very poor young mother I didn't have money for a doctor but I had a very knowledgeable Grandmother. This was very interesting and I read some books. I tend to use the "Emily" protocol now. People here in Appalachia with this type of skills and knowledge are called Granny Witches. I find that an odd name, I'm not a witch but folks 200 yrs ago thought it was magic.
